When can I introduce my yorkie to the world? My yorkie is 13 weeks old. Today we are going to go get him his last puppy shot. I really want to start taking him outside to explore our neighborhood. I was cautious because I don't want him getting sick. but now that his last puppy shot is on its way, how much longer should I wait? After this he's scheduled for his adult shots on 7/14 and his rabies on 7/16. Any insight is greatly appreciated. |
Hi, good for you for protecting your baby until he's gotten all his shots. I read about so many people who are so anxious to show off their new babies that they overlook this important step. I can't remember for sure, but I thought I read a week to 10 days after getting the last puppy shot, someone else can tell you the exact figure. I wouldn't be worried about going to people's homes, but still would want to avoid certain places. Using a carrier at places like Petsmart instead of allowing them to walk might be advantageous, if for no other reason than it takes them a long time to learn not to walk directly under someone's feet. Congratulations and a Warm Welcome to YT.... |

Pet Stores When Molly was little I use to take her in the stores after she got all her shots.. But she seem to get sick easy and we ended up at the vets.. He told me not to let her on the floor at any pet store because she is so close to the ground that she could pick up all kinds of sickness ..Not everyone get shots for their dogs .. Made a lot of sense and even when we are out walking I'm really careful because of everyone having their yards sprayed this time of year.. I'd rather think better safe than sorry... Diana and Molly |
I guess not too many of us can remember how long to wait, I do know many dogs have a reaction the day after the shots, sometimes with fever, so this means that their immune system is being challenged, so for sure you should wait at least a week in my opinion. You could always try asking your vet! :D |
After Tia had all her shots it was 14 days before it was safe to take her out, although it may vary from vet to vet. |
Thank you for all the great advice. I took him to a petsmart clinic today to get his "last" puppy shots, but the vet there said he still needed another set :( According to the paperwork that I got from the breeder, he only needed this last set, but the vet said that he recommends puppy shots until the dog is 4 months old. I was sad, because now it means I have to wait another month to get his last set of shots, plus the additional 2 weeks after that. I can't wait to take him out! But I care about his health so I must wait. |
