Coat/Hair Electronic Trimmer/Clipper (I posted this in the product section but got no answer so maybe it fits better here) Hi guys, I was wondering who in here trims their own furbaby? I bought an electronic clipper (sort of like the ones used on men's hair) which was supposedly for dogs but it does absolutely nothing on Gucci's hair. I put the 1/2" thingy on but doesn't seem to cut and if anything it seems to pull his hair. His coat is so silky and light. It's not mad curly but a bit wavy and when long it's actually straight. I really need to get a good trimmer b/c his hair grow so fast and I'd like to do it myself. The only groomer on the island is on the Frenchside and since she's the only on she's ALWAYS full. At times I have to wait 1-2 weeks for an appointment! Does anyone have/know a trimmer/clipper they recommend that can cut through my baby's hair? Thanks in advance for your response! |
Bumping this up for you. :) I only trim the ears so I got a small WAHL beard trimmer at walmart. It does what I need it to, but it's not going to be what you're looking for. Somebody else will have a good suggestion for you. :D |
There are lots of threads on clippers and trimmers in the grooming forum. I mainly just use a Wahl Peanut for trimming ears, feet, and sanitary. IT is a very small trimmer with the power of a larger clipper unit. For overall grooming, there are many good brands. It makes a big difference which model within the brand you get. For instance Wahl makes that cheaper pet clipper that Walmart sells. It works well for some coats, but Wahl also makes $200 clippers that have more features. Andis, Geib and Oster all have nice models to choose from. I would purchase through Petedge.com -- they have some good prices and a clipper will put you over their minimum order to not have a service charge. I want to buy a cordless Andis or Geib. But for now the little Peanut that I bought at Sally's Beauty Supply is doing what I need. I can trim up between professional groomings. |
I use my Oster that I bought for doing people hair and it works great BUT I had the same problem you did with it pulling Curlys hair when I tried to use the attachments (guards). So, you can try the clipper over comb method (no guard) if you're comfortable with that AND if your pup will hold still for it. This works great for us but it's not as easy as just zip zip with the guards on. |
I hope I'm not stating the obvious by saying you have to use the clipper against the way the hair is growing. The YTCA site gives some good instructions on how to use a clipper. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Grooming |
Hey Nancy, That's what I had assumed also but with Curly's cottony, thick, wavy hair, it still just sorta jams up and tugs her hair. I'm glad you said that though because I don't think everyone would assume. |

That's always worth a try! I've only actually cut Curly's hair once and I wanted to take it slow, never having cut a pups hair, only people hair so I started with the biggest but it just grabbed her hair and pulled. It didn't cut it, It may be also, Curly's hair is really, really cottony. As much as I love the feel of it, (it's sooooo soft!) It mats and tangles quite easily so I think all combined made it hard to cut with a clipper and guard. Funny aside: When we named her she was only 2 weeks old so her hair looked like every other baby yorkie, slick and black. I wonder if we cursed her with naming her Curly??? hahaha. |
