Meeting the New Puppy
 

I have a year old female and she is the baby. I will be taking her to pick up a 5 week old baby this Sunday. What can I expect with a new addition, anyone that has added a new puppy to the other yorkie please let me know how it went.

I had a 8 year old pom who was an only dog, then brought in Cali, then Pixie, then Dixie and then Roxie over a period of 2 years and never had any problems with them getting along from the start. I just give them all extra attention and never leave the new one alone with the other until I know they are all ok. 5 weeks is very young to bring home a puppy, be sure to have nutrical on hand. thanks for the tip I won't. Yes 5 weeks is young I brought home the first at 6 weeks , hand fed it what a bonding that brings. Your in Ill also may I ask where?

wow, a 5 week old puppy. That is so young. Are you going to be at home 24/7 ? i am also bringing home a new pup next week. She is a Shih tzu. Only 2lbs. It is going to be my first time with two dogs. Suzi is my Yorkie, and is 15months. She is a little fireball. I am home all the time, so this helps me feel better. Best wishes to you , and your new baby.

yes that is young and my first was about the same age and did just fine. I fed it around the clock and yes I am home 24.7 and it will be all that I do. I wouldn't attempt this without alot of training and learning from a breeder of 25 years or more. I have a vet who will be there is needed but the last time there was no need.

I won't rewrite it all here, but suffice it to say, 5 weeks is much too young. This is not putting the puppy first. Sure it is "fun" to play mom and hand feed tiny puppies for awhile. But that is definately NOT what is best for them. Please let the breeder keep the puppy with her mother and siblings until she is 12 weeks old. There is so much they have to learn and so much emotional bonding that happens in these next couple of months. To take a puppy home at that young of an age is irresponsible.

I just finished hand raising a litter because their momma did not make it. If there was any way I could have given them back those monthswith their mother, I would have done it. Nothing takes the place of a mother's nurturing.

Just because you did it before and the pup survived does not mean it was the right thing to do. I am very surprised a breeder with 25 years experience would not educate you on the reasons behind keeping them with their mother. No reputable breeder would let you have a pup that young. A puppymill breeder would. One that just wanted to get rid of the puppies would -- but not a reputable breeder.

Woooww, that is pretty young. I hope the breeder keeps her a little longer, for the sake, safety of the puppy.
Jazzies had been the princess for 2 yrs. I did take her with me when I picked up Lexie, so they could "bond" on the 3 hr. drive. Jazzie was obviously pissed, mind you she is a sweety. ... but she looked at me like - what the heck is this fur thing?, how could you mother? It took her almost 2 weeks to warm up to her, there were moments in between those 2 weeks that she would play with her, but it seemed aggresive, so I had to tell her No, play nice and separate them. I still watch them play since there is a size difference as well.
It may be just fine, each yorkie is a different character. Good luck.
