Won't go on the grass... I bought a new baby yesterday. She is 7 months old. She is NOT house trained. There is a lot of history, and I'll get into that later in the thread, but she will not go on the grass. She avoids the grass at all costs; can't wait to get back on the sidewalk. What do you think this means? BTW, I was told she was 90% house trained, whatever that means. |
More specifically, does that indicate she was in a kennel for long periods of time? I was told she was allowed to run around outside until she was ready to come in, but that does not seem to be the case at all. |
Our little shih tzu was 6 mos old when we got her. At the time, they did not try to hide that she'd spent the majority of her life in a cage. She had never touched grass.:( It took her awhile to get used to the idea of grass, but she did...some of my favorite pics of her are playing in the grass. |
My CoCo was a Puppy Mill dog so lived in a 2x2 cage her entire life (she's 2.5). I have had her a couple months and though she is potty trained to the point she will go outside as long as I remember to take her out, she will usually only go on the sidewalk or driveway. I hate it but it's better than going in the house. She dislikes the grass (especially if it's wet) and will head straight to walk around the yard via the mulch or on concrete. One can only assume that she has had no exposure to grass either due to the environment of 'yard' she was permitted to roam or she spend lots of time kenneled. |
This thread has just brought back a very funny memory of when I first brought Tia home. When I took her to the garden it was like she had never been outside before which she probably hadn't as she was in a barn when I got her ,she was scared of the grass and wouldn't put all her legs down it was so funny this 2lb puppy standing on 3 legs lol also she was so fascinated by the sky.A bird flew over and she ducked!:D |
Gucci doesn't like to walk on grass OR hard/grainy asphalt (the grainy type some driveway has). When I send him to peepee outside (usually if we're visiting someone as home he goes on the pad) he avoids the grass. When I put him on the grass he does this funny walk and gets off of it....the same for the grainy asphalt....it's kinda funny. I'll video tape it one of these days and post it ;) |
When we brought Bailey home - we could tell she wasn't accustom to grass either. She froze for a few minutes then began to "hop" around like a bunny. She quickly learned to like the grass and learned to run and play. She will pee outside in all kinds of weather - except the wind. For that, we go down stairs where the west is blocked or our front where the north is blocked. |

Sounds like the grass is a new thing for her and with time and exposure I bet she will learn to love the grass. Is it possible that where she came from was mostly patio in the yard where she was running? Or maybe even just a lack of grass.. mostly dirt? |
