NIGHTMARE Neighbor
 

I have been having a lot of issues with a guy and his two dogs who live in my neighborhood. I usually walk Cookie in our neighborhood for some good exercise, but one day I passed this guy's house and his two dogs come RUNNING for us and one of them attacks Cookie. She "eek'd" and screamed and it was horrible. I snatched her up and kicked them away as quickly as possible. Luckily she wasn't injured, but who knows what could have happened had I not snatched her up so quickly. They are both small-medium size dogs, but OBVIOUSLY dog-aggressive. We were just walking the public road in our neighborhood minding our own business. Totally Unacceptable. So, I called animal control. I gave them the address I thought they lived at and told them what happened. They assured me they would go over there and check it out. Well just the other day I was walking her again (now I'm paranoid about these dogs and always ready to pick her up) and I see the owner outside in his yard with the evil dogs. So I immediately walked up to him carrying Cookie and questioned him about the dogs. He confirmed they belonged to him, and I told him that one of them had attacked my dog. He was just like: "oh uh huh yeah I know ok" I proceeded to let him know how pissed off I was and how I wasn't taking this lightly, I shouldn't have to HOLD my dog every time I pass his house for fear of his loose animals. He seemed to not give a darn (I didn't tell him I had already called animal control) but I made myself pretty clear about the situation. Today, I walked Cookie as usual and what do I see? Both dogs loose. Running everywhere, all around the neighborhood. Once again I had to pick her up, hold her, and walk far enough away from them to be safe. Today is the last straw, tomorrow I'm calling animal control (it's too late to call today) and demanding that something be done about this. This is totally ridiculous, I'm not risking Cookie be seriously injured because of this man's irresponsibility. And I should be able to walk my dog in my own neighborhood without fearing for her safety. Has anyone had issues like this before? I kinda feel like animal control doesn't seem on-the-ball with the situation, and the man obviously doesn't care at all. Grrrr its very frustrating! :thumbdown

My neighor has a "big" puppy and so far he is not aggressive, but i always see him outside with this puppy with NO leash on. So when i walk Sweet Pea (which is a struggle as she doesn't like being outside walking, she wants to be held) i'm always looking behind us to make sure no dogs are running toward us.

My neighbor speaks spanish so i have pointed to SP's leash and then at his puppy so he knows what i'm trying to tell him.

I too wish people would be more responsible with their pets!

As I see it you have one of three options available to you. 1) Carry Dog Mace and use it the next time they attack. 2) Call the police and tell them you were attacked. 3) Drive to a 'safer' neighborhood to walk Cookie there.

My dad has had similar issues! Over in his neighborhood, basically all the dogs run loose. All of them are friendly but it's not cool having them roam all over the place, making my dad's dogs go crazy every time they're on the other side of the fence and having poop all over the neighborhood. There's a Golden Retriever, a Bulldog, a few small white poodle type dogs, a few Labs, etc. So, we deal with them running around, we don't like it but whatever, we're all animal lovers. Well, it was the last straw when a neighbor bought a brand new Lab puppy who is OUT OF CONTROL! He's "friendly" but he doesn't know his size. He's HUGE and he has no control. And they allow a PUPPY off leash. Well the other day he gave my little brother a HUGE black eye and knocked him over three times. My dad called Animal Control and reported it and they seem to keep him more contained. But whenever he gets away, they can never catch him and it takes an hour to get him under their control.

Leash laws mean something, it gives us the security to know that there is a law that should be followed that will help us avoid being attacked by a dog or one of our animals being attacked by a dog. I would absolutely be calling animal control just as you are and reporting every instance I see of them off leash. It isn't fair for you to have to avoid his street just because he isn't following the rules.

Yes, I know how you feel. I walked Josh today in my neighborhood. A stray dog came running out of somebody's yard trying to attack my dog. I picked Josh up, and I yelled at the dog to go away. The dog kept on following me and giving me this intense stare. I could not turn my back or run away from the dog, because I was afraid he would attack me. He followed me about six houses down the street. Then I decided to throw a bag I was carrying to pickup Josh's waste or rocks. I did not want to throw the bag or rocks at the dog, but I had to protect myself. When I repeatedly swung the bag in the air, then the dog decided to leave me alone. I could not believe the neighbor that was located right next to the yard where the dog came running out trying to attack me. They watched the whole thing without offering me any help as if they were watching a movie. How sad. I am definitely going to buy some mace. I love walking my pet. I would not want to be scared to walk my dog, because of some irresponsible owners.

The only other thing you have to worry about now is if people like that put poison or things not good for dogs in your yard. There are too many nuts out there that get off on hurting others or creating mischief to others. They don't care if they cause you harm or discern. YOu wonder what ever happened to the golden rule or the meaning behind it.

I would find another route to walk for your pups safety,I can't believe how irresponsible this guy is , some people should not own dogs.

We had a woman move in with her less than desirable boyfriend last year. He has a great dane sized pit bull. the thing is freakin huge and runs everywhere without a leash. I can no longer walk my dog and people coming and going from our home fear attack.

We found out that they're moving out this weekend supposedly. Dear God I hope so cause Animal Control has been worthless. Her cats run wild and crap in the kid's sandboxes. The dog is scaring us today. I have his drunk butt yelling over the fence for my kids to shut up in some rather unflattering language and I know they blame us cause they're having to move...... It isn't us. She broke the lease by having the dog and the boyfriend there. I've had to keep a close eye on Amelia cause I'm scared they'll retaliate against HER.

It is an aweful thing to have to worry about our yorkies, but it goes with our territory. Some dog owners will never change, so we have to change our ways of protecting these sweet little dogs. They are god's gifts only us know that and I intend to protect mine forever.

If you have a leash law in your town you might get better results calling the police rather then animal controll. Plus each time that persons dogs are caught loose by the police they will be fined. Not sure how many times they will hand out tickets before they probably remove the animals from the home. The town I live in is pretty strict on this. About the only time you see a dog on the loose is when it's gotten out of it's fence or broken it's chain. It doesn't even matter what the circumstance is if they catch your dog running free you get a ticket. Have you tried your local police?

Where can you buy dog mace? Does Petsmart carry it?

I vote for dog mace or one of those high pitched dog whistles (but your baby wouldn't like that noise either...)

PLEASE, don't lie and say that YOU were attacked. From making such statements this could possible bring the end of theses dogs lives.

I assume you just want their owner to be a responsible dog owner and leash his dogs when they are outside. Please, don't fault the dogs for the owner's ignorance and lack of training.

If your animal control is run under your local police department call the pd and complain to the Chief / Sheriff that animal control isn't enforcing the leash law (if you have a leash law that is). If not the pd then try your city manager or your county administrator.

In the mean time, I would carry the dog mace too.

I took my dog for a run last night and had a similar encounter. However it wasn't my Yorkies that were with me, it was my 110lb Rottweiler. I had a medium sized black dog run out of it's yard and charge my dog, this irritates me just as much as if I'd had one of the little ones with me. The owner looked at me like I had an alligator on the leash, and he is far less aggressive than either of my Yorkies! Please tell me how I am in the wrong? I wasn't worried about an altercation, because I can control my dog, but God forbid one of the babies were with me. They would have come un-glued!

I try not to start wars with my neighbors, or at the very least I try not to let them know how angry I am with them. I simply report them to our HOA or call the city and file a complaint. The last thing I want is someone who can see my comings and goings and act out while I'm not at home.

Thanks everybody so much for your responses! I hadn't really thought about calling the Police, but if (and when; I'm sure) I see the loose dogs again, I will definitely call the PD instead of Animal Control. I looked up Louisiana's leash laws and it stated the following: "State Laws Prohibiting Dogs Running at Large" Does that mean all dogs must be leashed? Does anyone know? Either way, I don't think the Police will argue when I tell them one of the dogs literally attacked mine, AND the fact that I've already tried to speak to the owner and reason with him. I have been taking Cookie to a public park that is pet-friendly. I like the park, but its about a 20 minute drive and when we got home Cookie was covered in picker-balls from the grass :rolleyes: But the park is very safe and everyone THERE is fully complying with leash courtesy. But car rides stress Cookie out so much that I just think it would be better to walk her in the neighborhood instead. I am going to walk Cookie tomorrow in the neighborhood and see if those dogs are loose. I'm going to bring my cellphone JIC they are and call the local police immediately! Where could I buy some of this doggie mace? I'll let everyone know what the Police say! :thumbup:

Well I think not only should all dogs be on a leash but on a shorter leash when in public. The other day my husband and I were walking Ivy & Max downtown when we came up on a pit bull. They were less then nice looking people and they had it on a leash but a long leash so their was no way I could go by without that dog being able to get to us. So we had to go on the other side of the street to get by and that is when they started laughing at us:mad: Hubby said to me let that dog come near ether one of our dogs and we will see who is laughing then. So what is the point on being on a leash when it can go 6 foot or more???

I'm not sure if Petsmart carries it, it may be called Animal Repelent, so you can check. If you Goggle Dog Mace you'll find many sites that you can order from.

Also, you may want to check and be clear on the law in your area. Pepper Spray is legal in all 50 states, however a number of cities and states have restrictions on sizes, strengths, etc.. If you have a question, it is wise to check with your local city or state attorneys office.

Your going to have to call Animal Control the minute you see them loose so they can catch the situation as it evolves. Horrible that the owner is so ignorant and doesn't seem to give two rats patootes that his dogs can get hurt or hurt someone.

Actually, that wasn't good advice that I gave. It is a crime to file a false report and you would end up being the one in trouble then. I apologize for that statement. It was made in a moment of frustration and not thoroughly thought through.

However, the attacking dog's life is the very least of my concerns. Have you ever been attacked by a dog? Have you ever had your dog, any other animal with you or anyone else with you attacked, viciously mauled and ripped apart by a dog? I have. It was horrible. I will never be without protection again, nor will I hesitate to use anything at my disposal to fully & completely protect myself, my pets or my friends. Yes, it is sad that so very many dogs aren't properly socialized, trained and monitored. But are you truly suggesting that I allow another dog to threaten, grievously injury or kill just because that vicious dog has ignorant owners? I'm sorry but that is not going to happen. I love all animals and I have a high respect for life and feel great empathy for all regardless of their situation in life. But I am charged with the care, health and safety of those put in my life and anything - person or animal - who steps outside of civilized boundaries and threatens me or mine will have to except whatever consequences come from their actions.

I hesitated to post a reply, and in fact have taken several days to think it over. I don't want to cause a fight or any hard feelings. I appreciate that you seem to have a different perspective. I hope you've never been attacked and I pray you never are. But if you ever do find yourself in that most awful of situations I pray even harder that you will have a way to defend yourself and not have to rely on the attacking dogs ignorant owners to save you.

I saw the dog mace at Petsmart yesterday. Also if your worried about these dogs running at large and attacking your babies, maybe you should take a trial walk on your own without your dogs just to see. It would be better to not take the chance of being attacked and having some bad consequences. I'm not sure how far away these dogs are but if you walk it first and all is clear then go back and get your dogs. I hope you get it resolved. It's really not fair that you should have to fear your dogs safety in your own neighborhood!

We ended up calling the cops on our neighbor after his dog came running around our van and chased my mother who was walking my dog into the house. She said he wasn't stopping. Cops went by and we haven't seen the dog since of course it helped our case a lot to have the dog some down the street to meet them when they pulled up.

Any dog can be trained and controlled , its the ignorant owners that should be punished not the dogs

I would be afraid he would be spiteful and get back at you or your dog for turning him in. Be careful! I wouldn't go near them.
