We may get a purebread Yorkie. Someone today offered us their purebread Yorkie. She's 5 years old. About 6 lbs. Not spayed. I just have a question: If your yorkie (or any dog for that matter) ISN'T fixed, how messy is it? I honestly have never had a pet that wasn't fixed so I dont know what I'd be in store for. We don't intend to breed her. The lady (she's a friend of a friend) offered to have her fixed before we take her, but I just went through spaying Reese. What do you think I should do? Another question: Have you ever taken in an older dog but chose not to keep their name? Her name is Daisy and I think it's cute, but was wondering if a dog would pick up on being called something else (I mean, i'm sure they would... as pets who end up adopted from shelters go throught that). Opinions on that? Thanks for reading! :) |
I think she should be spayed right away, don't know why she wasn't. Yes, I for sure think she would get used to a new name. I call my Maltese so many different names :D and he comes to all of them. good luck, I hope it works out for you!! :D |
That's great! I would have her spayed either before you get her or once she is settled in with you. I think they learn new names pretty quickly. Keep us posted. |
If the lady is willing to spay her and pay for it before she gives the dog to you I'd do it. If not I'd still have her spayed, I only had one dog go into heat and it was a 50# dog I'd just brought home from the Humane Society a couple days earlier. No thanks never again. Our rescue was 4 years old when we adopted her and it took her awhile but she answers to her new name now. |
2 Attachment(s) Thanks Guys! Here's photos of Daisy. She's so beautiful! :aimeeyork |
She is adorable congrats! |
Aww, she's beautiful! Congratulations!! :) |
Shes pretty. None of my females have ever Been messy when in heat. they lick a lot keeping it clean, but never see any blood on any thing. My little rescue Candy just came in her first heat yesterday. shes 6 1/2 months. I noticed her licking a lot and checked her out and sure enough she came in heat early. now Mickeys walking around with the lip quivers lOL.I wanted to have her fixed but when I got her she never even had first shots so we just now caught up with all her shots. she had 4 trips to the vet every 3 weeks until now. so now were going to have to wait until shes done to have her spayed. |
Thanks. Her ear hair and chin hair drives me NUTS. LOL! That'll be the first 2 things to trim off of her if we take her. Ear hair makes me nervous as reese had ear mites, and all the yorkie grooming tips I read said to keep hair off the chin area. ^ Congrats on your rescue Yorkie! LMAO @ the lip quivering thing though. HAHA! |
Wait! Another *Dumb* question... how often do they go into heat???! |
she is adorable.. |

But if you do not intend to breed, I would get her spade -- accidents do happen! |
Congrats, how lucky for you. She is a cutie... My furbabies all have long hair around the ears, (the hair inside the ear does get removed) never had any earmites. They all have beautiful beards, no problems with that either, I think its a beautiful part of a yorkie. Lots of luck.:) |
Adorable She is adorable, but for health reasons alone I would have her spayed as soon as possible. In fact if the lady will get her spayed I would let her do it. Congratulations! |
Being that your not going to breed her I'd have her fixed asap. We changed our dogs name three times before we settled on one, and he did just fine. Good luck. |
They go into heat every 4-7 months on average. When Ellie was in heat, you could barely tell but anything dripping. She was cuddler though and her breath took on a different odor. Her (new at the time) vet felt that she should be spayed and she was already six. We did it to prevent pyometra and I have no regrets... |
Just a little update. The current owner had her spayed on Friday. She should get her stitches out in about 3 weeks which happens to fall on July 3rd (my son's 4th birthday!). So we may bring her home that day which would be a great birthday gift! :) |
Congratulations!!! She is a beauty. |
The name change should be fine, but I love Daisy!;) |
Daisy is precious. She looks so shy in the 2nd picture. I like the name Daisy for her because of her eyes and gold hair, just like a pretty brown-eyed Daisy. I agree with getting her spayed also. Good luck in your decision. |
i am glad to hear that they had her spayed for you, It is just one less thing for you to worry about. She is a doll. Congradulations:) When I got Rocky, who was also six, I kept his name but I called him all kinds of silly nick names. He came to anything that I would call him;). He was a wonderful sweet dog. |
