Leo and I say Hi I am a newbie as of today. I joined because I would like info on some health issues. Saturday, the vet told me Leo, who is under 2 yrs old has luxating patella. His right hind kneecap can't be moved to the correct position and should have surgery now. His left kneecap is also off to the side, but can be pushed back to on top of the knee. I know this is an issue with yorkies, but I was caught off guard. No vet has ever mentioned anything about this before and he has been examined by many vets at this clinic. The vet said most don't check for this in dogs until the dog is lame with osteoarthritis. Better to do the surgery when he is young. The surgery cost is $2000.00 per leg. Leo does not seem to have pain now. He is a great fetcher of toys and chaser of his Ragdoll cat-brother. Thanks for having a group like this for us to join. Little Leo and Mom :idontknow |

Hi, :wavey: welcome to YT. Sorry to hear about Leo's problem. I've been blessed (so far) to not have this problem, but I would advise getting a second opinion, perhaps from a specialist before going through with the surgery. My vet checks my kids knees every time they come in. Your vets comment that vets only check for the problem after there is lameness would cause me a little concern. Good luck with whatever you decide and please keep us updated. Oh! And post some pictures of your cutie when you can!! :D |

My Pommie just had both knees done at K-State Vet Teaching Hospital in Manhattan, KS. Doing both knees cost around $1,600. If both knees need to be done it is better to have it done at the same time. Recuperating time is from 6-8 wks....almost always 8 wks. Add another 3 wks. of restricted activity. If you do each knee separately it would be at least 16 wks. of down time and 6 more wks. of restricted activity. The vets said that was not reasonable. We are now into our 10th wk. and Snowboy is doing excellent. Still limiting his activity, though for another 2 wks. I've been very strict and vigilant. It would such a waste of money to be careless and give in to the whines and complaints. |
