Moving to the Cold Weather... Brrrrr! So it’s official… we’re moving. From warm, breezy northern California to wet, freezing Utah. Don’t ask. :D Anyway, I wanted to hear from all you cold-weather dwelling yorkie owners out there. Any suggestions on the best way to acclimate my little one to living in a colder climate? The winters are pretty long there and I want to be sure my baby adjusts okay. She’s trained to do her business outside – except when I’m at work, she stays in her room with a pee pee pad. Do they need to be really bundled up for the cold? Do they need boots for the snow? Any suggestions would be appreciated. We’re moving there in December believe it or not! |
Here in Michigan it gets pretty cold...Yoda has lots of sweaters and several coats, a rain coat and booties....Good luck adjusting to the cold :p |

When there is snow, we can't walk. It would be too deep for a yorkie here where I live (no sidewalks) and then when they blade the street we normally walk down, they also salt it. Messy, nasty black gunk. You don't wanna be out there when a car drives by, even as slow as they go on our particular street because it is a cul de sac. We just wait until the snow melts enough in the yard to walk or go find a walk downtown to get some exercise on. There have been many times when I have put a tee-shirt under Muffin's sweaters or coats when we walked. They do get cold, but Muffin loved her walks. Kacee has never seen a winter yet, but I can't see cold weather stopping her, either. :D I hope you have an attached garage where you're moving, because that is where I put pee pads for Muffin to use in the winter, at night, and on rainy days. She never had pee pads in the house. With Kacee, she will use pee pads when we don't go to the door when she rings the bell or when we're gone. Good luck! :D |
Because I live in central Texas, I don't have any good advice for you except to tell you that when we took Rowdy to Colorado to the moutains this summer, he got really really cold. He didn't want to wear a sweater - when I put it on him, he just acted like he was paralyzed and wouldn't move (it was the first time I had put any clothes on him). So when I took him out in the mornings (it was in the mid 30's), he would do his business quickly, then I'd pick him up in a flannel blanket and carry him back to the trailer. Even in the trailer, he would snuggle down in the blankets in his bed and when we would sit outside in the evening after it cooled off, he would be wrapped in a blanket or in the case of the picture of him in my avatar, wrapped in my flannel shirt! |
We went to Utah in Dec it was freezing like :eek: & i lived in Calgary Canada,where it couldnt get any more colder like 0 deg :rolleyes: My Daughter got Married in Utah in Dec,thats why we went,but you know it really is a great place to live,lucky you :cool: |
Well first of all now is the time to buy Bridgett a lavishing wardwobe. :yeahthat: Remember these little gals & guys don't have an undercoat. They need sweaters, coats, booties etc. Or they'll get very cold. :omg: Poddy Pads are a blessing also. :yorkiesar |
We are from Alaska and moved to upstate NY so I know all about cold weather ;) Simon and Hallie have coats, sweaters, boots and scarves. They refuse to wear the boots so walks in the winter are limited since they salt everything here. I usually put their coats on to take them into the car and they both go on potty pads. Also, lots of blankets ;) Utah is beautiful and I used to go there every November to Park City to go skiing for my bday. I love it! Good Luck with your move! |

The one time it snowed here, Chewy LOVED it. He ran back and forth across the yard, plowing it with his nose! I should add that shorty thereafter he was back inside. ;) |
1 Attachment(s) If she is used to grass you may want to invest in a Pet-a-Potty. I bought one and keep it on my courtyard but it could go in the garage or the laundryroom too. Here is a picture of Ava using hers. |
I can relate to cold...the winters are horrid cold here and I hate them more every year! Many times we've made the national lows. Ugh. I got Maddie in November of last year and it was still fairly warm then, but in December we got weeks of below 0 weather...as low as -40. Maddie refused to go potty on the pads and I even fixed up a pee place in the garage, but she would not go there either. She HAD to go out in the frigid cold. I would stand right there...shak'n in my boots...and quickly pick her up and put her inside my coat when she was finished. I always put sweaters or coats on her, but no amount of clothing is enough for the frigid cold weather. I really dread winter coming and I'm sure Maddie will not be spending as much time outdoors as she's used to now. Our winters are soooo darn long too. Ugh. I guess my suggestion would be...warm clothes and find lots of activities to do indoors. If she'll use pee pads, that would be the best solution. Boots would be a great idea...keep her little feet from freezing! Good luck with your move! |
1 Attachment(s) simonandhallie's mom lived in Alaska a lot longer than me, so follow that advice first! Eddie loves the snow, to the point that we try to limit his time outside to a pee and a poop. He'd stay out there all day if I let him, but I watch to make sure he's not shivering. I usually make sure I stomp down the snow in front of the house; otherwise, he'll dive in up to his neck and come out with it clinging to his fur. When that happens, you have to take out the blowdryer to get all the frozen clumps out or he'll be leaving puddles all over the house. Otherwise, I agree with all the other advice. Get a warm fleece coat and booties if your pup will stand them and you have the patience to try to put them on. Keep a towel by the door to dry him off, and you'll be fine. I lived in Utah for a winter and loved it. If you're not up in the mountains, the snow and temperatures aren't that severe. |
Chilly Alaska 2 Attachment(s) We moved to AK as well after living in Cali. Were back now, but it was something for Merlot to get used to. During winter we dealt with -50 degree weather! I tried many different coats and sweaters and booties. The ones that he and I both liked best were the fleece ones. They have fleece jumpsuits to cover his front and back legs which are really warm. We tried tuffy boots, but they just wouldn't stay on his feet and made him walk funny. The fleece booties worked best. There came a point when he got acclamated to the weather, but I still had to watch him closely. If he began shivering we would come back in. I always rinsed his feet in warm water when we came in as well. Snowballs get stuck on them! He developed frost bite on his ears at one point. Poor little guy. The vet told me from then on to keep cocoa butter on them and that helped alot. Anyhoo- I think that about covers it!! :animal36 |
Sometimes it snows here in NC & Jewel wears her little sweater. I think your baby's coat will naturally thicken up during the colder months. I don't know how their bodies know, but Jewel's gets very thick during the winter & thins out during the summer. Don't worry, your baby will be fine. Just focus on the moving itself. JM |
