Pros/Cons?
 

Hello, I'm new here. I found this site while looking for info on Yorkies because I was considering on getting one. Thought it might be better to hear the pros and cons of the breed from people who own them. ;) I currently have a 2 year old Bichon Frise, so I'm not completely new to having a dog. But I'm a newbie when it comes to Yorkies.

Something tells me you will get a lot more pros then cons here! You will love a Yorkie becuase they are cute like little teddy bears, smart and alert, loyal and have very expressive personalities. They also think they are big dogs stuck in their little bodies...very cute and funny to watch them play.

I've had small dogs all my life (I'm 65) and I can tell y ou this is the first Yorkie I've had and they are wonderful companions! Cute, playful, loving, loving, loving! Did I say, loving? They absolutely adore you. They are a little upkeep, though. I brush her teeth every day, comb her hair, and put a bow in, and wash the eyes out. You would love one, I know !!!!!

They are EVERYTHING that everyone has said and MORE! I have had dogs in my life (not always mine) for 15+ years, and I have NEVER been so captivated by a dog than my little Rowdy - he is just everything that you could ever want in a companion. About the only negative thing I can think of is that I WORRY about him too much. I worry that he will get stepped on cause he is so little - I worry when he doesn't eat quite right - I worry that he will pick up something off the floor and choke - so basically you can see the that negatives are MY problems, not him.

I have had many Yorkies in 35 yrs..I can not find anything negative about them.
They tend to be harder to house train and need dental attention more then some breeds..but there is no breed like a Yorkie and any cons are totally overlooked at this house.

I decided to get a dog after many years of being pet free after my kids left home. It became pretty clear after my husband's diagnosis of cancer that going to many different places after retirement wasn't going to happen, so I started to research the kind of pet I wanted. Yorkies fit exactly. Not just intelligent, really intelligent, I can say get the blue ball, Chloe will get it. I say its night night time, Lacey heads for her kennel. Small enough for me to bathe easily and small enough to take with me almost anywhere. Beautiful coats, no shedding and faces that rip your heart out. Playful almost to a fault, that's why I have two, sometimes I can't play. Wonderful personalities and affectionate. Cons? Well, they are smart enough to get my attention by pottying in the house on occasion. You must be able to give them attention by brushing coat and teeth. Many people are still working, so their darlings are alone but I think it is a breed that appreciates having you with them as much as possible, although they adapt to almost anything. Some very tiny yorkies have frequent health issues and so far I'm not sure how to tell exactly how big one will be as a puppy. I have one at 6 lbs and one at 3lbs. The smaller one definite has to get attention for hypoglycemia, where the larger does not. I would not trade them for anything, they are like my children.

Well, there are a million pros. Some cons are that they are impossible to housebreak and take up a ton of your time (way more than any other dog I've ever had). Neither of which bother me, but would definitely bother some.

You should post a photo of your Bichon. I love them.

i think housetraining depends on the dog...... toby has been trained since six months (lol.... tough love applied) and i know other people are still having trouble with 3 year olds :rolleyes: ....
cons... there are a few, like the coat care (thankfully tobys hair doesnt mat, i dunno why :confused: ) they have great little personalities. I didnt realize that yorkies were SO ATTACHED to their humans it was a little terrifying to walk out of the house and here screams coming from the animal no biiger than youre foot :eek: i dont have problems in the grooming department but like any other dog some dont like to be brushed or have their nails clipped ect... i have never heard of so many medical problems before in my life (i have owned golden retrievers my whole life and decided on a yorkie because i became allergic ) so you really have to RESEARCH. i dunno i am nuetral. Yorkies are great, goldens are great. I am just a dog person, give me a dog and ill be happy :p
