Is She Really A Yorkshire? I have a yorkshire terrier, with papers, (not AKC) and she is 7 months old and weighs 12 lbs. Im wondering if a Yorkie really can get that big, or is she possibly mixed? |
Yes Yorkies can get that big! There are several here on YT that some lovingly call "TeaPots". I have seen them up to 20lbs. Would love to see pictures of your Yorkie! Welcome to YT by the way!!! :) |
My Layla is 9 1/2 pounds and had brothers in her litter that were 12 and 14 pounds. Their Mom was 9 pounds and their father was 5 1/2 pounds. So you never can tell what size they may be. |
The problem with the other registries is that they take the breeder word for it; you don't really need proof. Unfortunately, some breeders lie, but just because your dog isn't standard doesn't mean he isn't a Yorkie. Good breeders breed to standard, and don't breed dogs over 7 pounds, that keeps the offspring in the smaller range, but even then a it's possible for a larger Yorkie to be born of smaller parents. I always recommend that buyers look at the parents, to get a better idea of how the puppy will eventually look. Lots of people love their plus size yorkies, and I think they are really great for families with children, or those who have other larger dogs. |
Welcome to YT :wavey: My yorkie, Twinkle, came from standard-sized (pure yorkie) parents but is 12lb now at almost a year old.....she's a spayed family pet, and is the perfect size for our family. My other yorkie, Wicket, is 3lb at four months so I he's going to be a big boy too!:D I thin everyone will agree that yorkies are adorable whether big or small, and unless you want to breed or show, size really doesn't matter:) xxx |
Thanks so much for the info. This little gal of mine has a sweet disposition...loves everyone..i dont think thee is a mean bone in her body. She minds preety well too. doing great on dog obedience classes. We picked her out of the litter because we wanted a female, and because her mother was super friendly and calm. her dad was more hyper. she weighed the most at 7 weeks.. she was 4 lbs. I did see the parent dogs..they were adorable..and good temperment..sooo we bought her. I actually would be afraid to have a 3 or 4 lb one..probably step on it or something. We walk every day...she is a good size. i just get upset when you tell people she is a yorkshire and they look at you like No shes too big..she must be mixed. Thanks for the encouragment. By the way, these people were not breeders, they just had two yorkies and wanted babies. One is akc registered, and the other was another kennel registry. PS i posted an album... called it Molly - Fa- lootie... Im italian and malafalutee in italian means,, big goof or mistake.. he heee my sister calls her that. but everyone just loves her cute face! chris in illinois |
what a cutie! she is certainly a yorkie!! what happened to her poor little leg? |

I think you're little girl Yorkie is adorable. As for size.....We have a larger Yorkie named Annie. We visited the breeder several times to see Annie grow up until we could bring her home. Her mother was 6 lbs, her father was 4 lbs, even met her grandma at about 4 lbs. Annie is healthy, happy, energetic, AKC registered and about 13 lbs at 4 years old. I never intended to breed her ( I would want to keep every puppy)so size was not important as long as I have a healthy dog. Never let anyone make you unhappy about your babys size. Just love her and be glad that she's not a super tiny fragile puppy. 7 lbs is the standard, but like those height/weight charts for humans.....we aren't all in the same size range !!! Hugs, Eun |
