Teaching to speak I taught Tyler to speak and am quite proud of him... the only thing is he growl/barks.. if you know what I mean? How can I get him to actually bark? I try to excite him more but so far he just does the growl/bark! It's cute but just wondering! (= |
We're working on this too! :) I am having another issue with teaching it. If Thor already wants to bark at something, say another dog outside, he happily barks on command. If he's in a less energetic mood, he will only bark every two or three times I ask. Otherwise, he'll just murmer. What I am working on is "shaping". If you are confident that Tyler knows he is supposed to make SOME kind of noise when you give the command, start only treating him for his louder noises. If he gives a real bark, give him a "jackpot" of four/five treats at once. Thor of course has also concluded that he should just be barking more generally, so he's back to five alarm barks whenever my neighbors lift a finger. I'm working on just getting the bark on command. |
I tried that before you ever mentioned it )= Now he won't make ANY noise. It's like he decided "Well pfft.... see if I make noise at all for you". |
So he was making some noise before, and now he's quieter? He is probably confused about what he's supposed to do. He may also be positioning his body a certain way, or something. You should be able to build the behavior back up; reward EVERY noise, with bigger treats on louder ones. He has to be really confident on the command before you can start fine-tuning it. Also, I don't know if you are, but you can't correct him for barking at other times, because that will confuse him. Is there anything that always gets a big ol' bark out of him? The doorbell maybe? You can also make the signal and say "Speak" whenever he barks, and treat him, so the association will strengthen. Let me know if you have any luck. :) |
yea i started to reward him for the small noises and he's doing it again (: he really ONLY barks when the doorbell rings so i will have to try that (: check out the video in the video thread of him (: it is soooo cute <3 specially how his little tail stub wags when he "speaks" |
