New to YT Hi everyone out there in YT....A couple of days ago 3 to be exact we got a 2 month year old Yorkie. We named it MELO since it was so layed back and cool but it is also a name of a basketball player named Carmelo Anthony. The first day he was so scared he did not come out his cage so the next morning i let him out so he can sniff around and get used to his new environment and now he warmed up to us and follow us around. He is a lovely dog and we are in the process of training him. I had a few questions and I will search for some answers in the fourm but thought i throw the questions out there anyway.... 1) What age can i put a leash around him and walk him? 2) I found this werid but it might be normal behavior, but when i let him out of his cage and he walks around for a bit and he sees me he gets on his stomach and starts to growl and bark don't know why.... 3)He pees on the wiwi pads but he don't like to poop on it. 4)He is in his teething stage but instead of licking our hand he tends to bite it how can we control that do we say no bad or do we shut his mouth to show and tell him that is wrong. I appreciate any answers and we are newbies dog owners but we want to train him right at this age or we will regret it later.... I am happy to run into this site it is AWESOME..... |
Well I know you shouldn't put your puppy on the ground outside until he has all his shots because you run the risk of him getting parvo and it could be deadly. I don't want to scare you, but you should know how serious it is. About him biting, I got my Bella at 8wks and I was told that yorkies shouldn't leave their moms and siblings until they were at least 12wks old. Reason being is that between the ages of 8 and 12wks is when they learn how to socialize with others. Ex, if they bit too hard while playing with their mom she could correct him the dog way. There are so many posts regarding what to do about this, Yt is great! I will just give a little exagerated yelp, to show her she has hurt me, and then no longer play with her, kinda ignore her. She gets the point, now, and then she will come over and give me sweet kisses. Every yorkie is different so just see what works for you. Good luck! |
Sorry, I forgot to say :welcome4: to Yorkie Talk. It's a great place and it will have you reading for hours! Seriously! Enjoy! |
:welcome4:Hi and welcome to Yorkietalk! Congrats on your new baby! You will find a wealth of information here. You don't want to take him out in public or on walks until he's had all of his shots. You can start getting him used to a harness and leash, however. Please don't use a collar with a leash as yorkies are prone to collapsed trachea. I suggest a step in harness but there are lots of different types out there to choose from. My recommendation for the "mouthing" behavior is to remove your hand when he starts to bite and replace it with an appropriate chew toy. (keep lots of those around:)) Don't yell out or respond to his mouthing verbally as that might get him excited. I thought Ginger would never stop this, but I have to say she has a very behaved little mouth now that she's all grown up.:) I have never used pee pads, so will defer those questions to someone else, however for potty training, your best friend is a strict feeding/pottying/sleeping/playing schedule so that he gets into a routine and you can begin to predict when he'll need to go. Good luck and when you can, post pics! We love puppy pictures!:) |
Everyone has already given much better advice than I can, so I'll just say ... Welcome to YT!! |
