Airline Travel concerns Hello all! Prince is the first dog I've owned on my own (without my parents) I'm going to be flying to visit my parents and I'm taking him with me. I purchased 2 different carriers. One is airline approved and the other is so that I can carry him with me to local shops and small stores. My question is what happens if Prince barks on the plane? He has always been easily startled, he's like an alarm for me which I love because I live by myself. Could this be trouble on the plane? Will I get kicked off? How do I make him stop if he does, but still let him know it's okay to warn me about intruders or curious sounds while at home? |
The dog will be under the seat and given the noise on the plane, you needn't worry about his barking. Bring a chew toy for him in his carrier. Some folks have tried Rescue Remedy. Just make sure he likes his carrier before the flight. |
Our Wylie is a good flier, although he occasionally paws at the bag. Marcel, our little guy, is not a good flier. He cries, and will bark occasionally. He just wants out. I have also been on a flight where a dog barked almost non-stop, wow that was tough. We tried benadryl - didn't do a thing for Marcel. So we now use Acepromazine and it works perfectly. He can relax and not be stressed. Ace is not for all dogs, so you'd want to talk it over w/ your vet - and you'd also want to try it beforehand, once. Like almost all meds, it can be given very safely - if your dog needs it. Valium is another option, but we couldn't find anything small enough for Marcel at the time. |
My girls are very barky at every noise when we're at home (or in a hotel room), but when we're out in public, they rarely make a sound. Sissy has traveled with me a lot the past 6 months and I've never had a peep out of her while on the plane. The carrier must be under the seat for take-off and landing, but most times once you're in the air, you can put the carrier on your lap (though they can't come out and the carrier should stay closed). If he remains content under the seat, I wouldn't move him - but if he needs comforting, having the carrier on your lap where you can (hopefully) put your hand inside and talk to him may help. |
Oh, thought of something else I had wanted to say - when you travel on a plane in summer (and even at other times), the area under the seat can get quite warm (especially when not in flight, when just waiting). I use those frozen gel packs and put them in the carrier (on the bottom) w/ a towel wrapped around it. Security has never said a thing about it, which is nice. |
you guys have taught me so much! I didnt know I'd be able to put the carrier in my lap while in the air. that will make things much better for him becaues I don't even use a crate for him because he goes NUTS! Is that bad? I'll probably practice before I leave and if he goes crazy I'll ask my vet about those meds... the flight is only 1 hour, but still... i'd hate to disturb the other passengers.. |

I would highly recommend you see how he reacts w/ the crate...for en extended period of time. Because I cannot tell you how stressed I was for Marcel's first flight, when he acted up the whole time. I felt SO bad for him, so bad for those next to me, and so stressed myself bc I felt helpless. Some dogs really do do fine....but others....do not :p. |

LOL well they cant kick you off the plane if its in flight now can they haha. I would ask the flight attendant if you can set your pooch on your lap under the blanket or something, or maybe even just sneak him under your blanket if he will sit quietly hehe |

Lots of tips Mybabe, there are lots of great travel tips in the Travel section of this forum. I just took my yorkie on a trip, and it went smooth as butter thanks to all the excellent information in old threads. For several weeks before your trip, leave the carrier out near your Yorkie so he/she can get used to it. Give him/her treats for getting in the carrier, and start taking doggy out in the carrier for longer and longer times. This worked perfect for my doggy and many others. Good luck! |
International travel I have a question about international travel. Although it will be 3 1/2 more years until I am forced to fly with Marley I was wondering what is the longest flight anyone has flown with their furbaby. The flight here was 13 hrs from Dallas to Tokyo. Is this ok? I would be worried about her eating and pottying schedule. I would want her in the passenger area with me , although I have heard that JAL are very good with pets. I still would want her with me. Any tips on international flying and long flights would be greatly appreciated! |
