Is this normal?
 

hey everyone. im new here and about to make the hardest deicision of my life or so it seems thus far haha.. im about to get a yorkie (my first doggg ever!) and i have 2 concerns. First off the breeder has a girl and a boy (brother and sister) and im interested in the boy. so i drove to go see him and he was a bit hyper and nibbled and i got nervous because the previous yorkie i looked at was calm and didnt do this. but everyone has been telling me that this is normal bc he's a puppy and thats what they do! is that true? Im only nervous bc if i bring him around people i dont want him to bite them! So now my parents actually said that they'd take his sister too if i decide to get the boy. so now onto my real concerns..

1. she is going to let me take them at 8weeks. is this too early?

2. they come with AKC papers but ONLY after i have proof of getting them fixed. Is this ok?


please let me know what you guys think! im going CRAZY trying to decide!

Hi and welcome, 8 weeks is a little young to be separated from the mom try to see if the breeder will hold the pup for 12 weeks. Remember......they are like babies they do not know anything unless you teach them, I would suggest you take the time to really look at this site and buy a book on yorkies to get yourself familiar with the bread as well as training. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking smaller dogs are easier when it is just the opposite, people tend to feel they can overlook things in a small dog when you really need more training. As far as the registration goes I do not know about that since Milo is a mix. You have stumbled upon a great site here ask lots of questions, and pick peoples brains you will thank yourself in the long run.

The mother club, the YTCA recommends you only buy from breeders who sell their dogs after a MINIUM of 12 weeks. So on this point I would be very cautious, it doesn't sound like this breeder has studied the breed, and doesn't seem interested in what's really best for her puppies, but what's best for her. How much do the dogs weigh? If they are bigger than standard, it's not as dangerous to take them home before 12 weeks, but important socialization skills are learned from the mother after the babies stop nursing, specifically inhibition of the biting reflex. Puppies have to learn not to give a full throttle when they bite, and this is best taught by the mother. For the first 6 months, they do a lot of biting, and you'll be glad, if they have been taught this. I got Joey from an excellent breeder and I didn't get the full papers to register him with me until he was neutered, but she did have proof that he was registered as a litter. Again, you must be cautious, because many people later found that the puppies were never eligible for registration because while the breeders dogs were registered, she didn't have breeding rights to register any offspring. They usually will tell you it costs a lot and why bother, but it's only $20.00, and most dogs just aren't eligible. They don't want you to know you paid AKC prices for a non-AKC dog.

she may be letting her go that early if she is over 2 lbs- however, like many said, she should stay with her mom and littermates until at LEAST 10-12 weeks for socialization if nothing else.

Welcome! My hyperest puppy Cali turned into my real laid back girl. It just depends. Puppies are a bit nippy and you need to not let them get away with it. I think that is great that you get the male and your Mom the female! Good luck!

Welcome to YT!!! I know that it is best to wait until the pup is at least 12 weeks old, but I got Winston at 8 weeks and he turned out just fine...as a matter of fact he was much better behaved then my first Yorkie was at 12 weeks. I really think it depends greatly on the pup...and sometimes the breeder will know when the pup is ready to leave mom and when they are not quite ready yet. Puppies naturally nip and you need to stop them from doing it from the get go. I know the rule of thumb is 12 weeks but I got Gracie at 8 weeks and she is a wonderful pup and very well adjusted. However, she has a big sis who thinks she's Gracie's mom and protector. Maybe that made a difference....who knows. As others have posted about the registration many breeders will give you the registration papers until you have the pup spayed, but they should be able to show you the form that you will receive when that happens.
