When to spay Bella??? Hi YT'rs, Bella is 11wks now and weighs 1.9lbs. She went to the vet yesterday with my DH and the vet said she had hernias. We had no idea. The vet said we can spay Bella in another month and then he can also operate on the hernias at the same time. But I thought we were supposed to spay/neuter at 6months? Plus, because of how much she weighs, wouldn't that be dangerous? I didn't get to speak to the vet since I didn't go, i will soon though. In the mean time, any advice or words of wisdom. Even do's and don'ts for her care in the mean time. Thanks everyone. |

As far as having her spayed in a month, if your comfortable with this vet then go for it. Just speak with them about her small size and your concerns ahead of time. |
Hm, personally, I would wait until she's at least six months old. It CAN be done at a very young age as a lot of shelters neuter/spay young so they can be adopted. But, because of her weight and also, usually Yorkies must have retained baby teeth removed as well and it's best to do that while they're under for their spay/neuter operation. If you trust your vet though, he will tell you what's best. |
I'm going thru the same thing. My Vet said there were no special things to do until she is spayed and she will repair the hernia then with just a couple of stiches. I presume it is an inguinal hernia which is what mine has. BTW I am waiting as long as possible to have mine spayed due to her size, maybe not until she is one, the smaller ones mature more slowly and she may not come into heat until after that. |
I have seen puppies outgrow the inguinal hernias. It is something you definitely want to keep an eye on. How big are the hernias? The post important thing to watch for on a dog with a hernia is constipation. If the dog is straining to poop it can make the hernia worse. Personally I would wait before having her spayed. I might even get a second opinion. Best of luck with her. |
I have been debating on the same thing with Maddie, she is just a hair under 2.5lbs and will be 7 1/2 months old on tuesday. I wanted to get her spayed before her first heat for sure, and was told that the smaller ones usually take longer to mature. I also was hoping that she would hit 3lbs first. Well my sweet little girl came into heat about 3 days ago, now we are going to wait untill about a month after she is done. If I were you I would try to get her done right arround 6 months, this way she will most likely never go into heat and you can repair the hernia, spay her, and get baby teeth done all at the same time. Also make sure your vet has exp with really little ones.:) My vet spayed many of the puppymill puppies from a recent sieze, and alot of those puppies were only 3-4 months and between 1-2lbs. Most importantly you have to feel comfortable with the timing, procedure and vet:) |
I would wait until 6 mos of age, unless the hernias can't wait to be repaired. |
