Neighbors Offer To Befriend Our Yorkie Our Yorkie barks like crazy at any neighbor that comes near our back fence. That is her yard, her fence and so is everything around it! One neighbor came to the fence and asked if he could give her treats to try and make friends with her. I at first said yes, but she's a rescue and doesn't eat milkbones, just certain things. Then I thought maybe it's not a good idea. What if someone gave her something that could make her sick or kill her? None of my neighbors would do that I don't think but someone who hates her barking might. So I didn't give the guy any treats to hand out. Am I worrying to much? Should I give him treats to give her? Hubby doesn't think she'll let him get close enough to her to take a treat anyway. |
Maybe try by giving the treat to him for her, but that if you know this neighbor and kind of trust him;) |
Ooh, that is a tough one. On one hand it is so nice the neighbor is making the overture to make friends, but on the other hand, I would be leery about anyone else feeding my dog too. What if your dog likes the treats and they feed too many, ruining his appetite for the quality food you want him to eat? What if others think this means they too, can feed your dog. I might instead, offer them a couple of very small toys and suggest they try to make friends by offering them. Would that be an acceptable compromise? You could tell them about the Yorkie stomach being so small that an extra treat or two a day could get them off track nutritionally or just tell them how picky they are. |
I told him I could give him some treats for her I knew she liked but then didn't know if it was a good idea for her to take food from someone at the fence. The people have lived there for more than 16 years. |

I should do that, maybe let him give her a treat while I hold her. But tell him I'm worried about the kids on the other side feeding her stuff not knowing better. They are supposed to be afraid of dogs but they get close enough to the fence to get her going and think it's funny. They are a nice family but three very young kids and another on the way. Dogbert. Yep, hubby and I worked for a big company and swore the guy who wrote that comic strip secretly worked with us. It was so funny yet so true! |
I don't like my pups eating anything that I (or DH) don't give them myself. I don't want them to look at other people for treats/food. Your neighbors might be fine, but if a stranger has a chance to trick your pup to go with them with/for food.....that wouldn't be good. Maybe try to block the pups from getting by that part of the fence, barking at the neighbor. I have started using a small can with a chain in it - shaking it to break the barking fits. Slowly it is working. |

I would allow a neighbor to give my dog a treat if I had given them the treat in the first place and I trusted the dog not to bite and the neighbor to not do anything stupid. Yorkies should always have a person outside watching them anyway, so the kids shouldn't really have a chance to feed your Yorkie anything if you are there watching... |
Yea what I was thinking I wouldn't they might not know whats not good for your yorkie ...Like onions and stuff like that and if the kids been teaing him he might bite them giving him a chance ....I think the one who said to make a place where he isn't up to the fence prob would be a good idea :animal-paJust my opinion:animal-pa |
