3 Legs Hi guys i need your help.... A few days ago my yorkie all of a sudden started walking on 3 legs. So we thought he maybe sprained /twisted or broke something. We felt around his leg every part including the bones and he didnt make any sounds such as cry or anything. So we figure nothings broken. Now two days past and he moves on 3 legs less. Now he only does it when he wakes up from sleeping and moves on 3 legs for like 20 seconds and then startes moving normally. What could this be? I mean if something was broken or sprained he would neither be able to move , nor stand on it , nor would it go away. Also he runs for his toys really fast and on all fours normally. And when we take him for a walk he picks up his legs high to pee as normal. So i dont know what this could be? could it be that he just hit his leg or stubbed it somewhere and that it will go away? Sort of like a little black and blue? ???? |
I think the best thing to do is to take your pup to the vet asap, hope is nothing serious, but if your pup is limping is because he is in some kind of pain:( |
:( Luxating Patella :( His knee cap is sliding in and out of its groove. When he carries his leg, the knee cap is out and he can't get it back in. Yes this is kinda uncomfortable. You should see the Vet |
Yep, I would go for the vet visit too. These little ones are very susceptible to bone, joint and soft tissue damage. A quick check up and maybe an xray should alleviate some concerns and might save worse problems in the future. |
Luxating Patella My 1 year old, Bently was doing the exact thing. I took him to the vet and he has stage 2 Luxating Patella. I started walking him every morning and night and giving him a supplement chew called Zuke's Hip Action ® Dog Treats with Glucosamine & Chondroitin and within a week he stopped limping and is in great shape. I tried a liquid supplement first and Bently hated it. He loves these treats. Good luck John |
so this patella thing is able to be treated and cured with supplements? .. Wow hes only 7 years old and is taken such good care of. Can't believe he would have this problem. BUT the weird part is he doesnt make any noises like hes crying or its in pain , i was told dogs usually make sounds like their crying when it hurts? |

Supplements Sorry, I didn't mean for you too think that you shouldn't go to the vet. Definitely go have your Yorkie checked out. Since Bently only had stage 2 the vet said I shouldn't even think about surgery. The vet said to walk him more and give him a supplement, both of which turned out to help him. My Bently is only 1 year old and from what I've read this effects small dogs of any age. Good luck...... John |

Your right, toy dogs are prone to LP. |
Aw your poor baby. I hope everything gets straightened out. That happened to our previous golden and it turned out she had bone cancer, but I know yorkies our prone to the LP. Definetally get to the vet. Good luck and let us know. |
thankyou so much for your response everyone. Im going to make an appointment as soon. as possible. Hopefully its not LP and just a little bruise because he jumps and falls off all the time.Like if we hold him he jumps out of our hands before we have chance to put him down. So it could be an injury.hope its not lp or bone Canc. ... Well see... Thankyou all who response and so promptly. really appreciate it.:) |
Let us know what the vet says. What's the baby's name? |

LP has 4 Grades. IMO Grade 3 and Grade 4 should have surgery to stop the luxation. LP can't fix itself, and you can not *un-do* the damage. The luxation over and over causes the cartilage to wear away, once worn down, you have bone rubbing on bone, which means pain and lots of it. Alot of us here, including me have LP dogs. If surgery is required, please seek an Ortho Specialist to do the surgery, and make sure they will be doing the cut and pin type of LP surgery. As for supplements, alot of us are using Cosiquin, by Nutromax. They seem to be the only company that has actual case studies to back there product. Best Wishes and keep us posted :) |
Luxating Patella I took my Yorkie to the vet today because she started limping on Saturday afternoon all of a sudden, and no one saw what happened. I waited to take her today (Monday) because she wasn't in any pain and was still running around on 3 legs. And because I've panicked so many times with the Emergency Vet. So, the vet (not my usual one but a stand in) said she needs surgery to repair a luxating patella. And probably needs all four knees done. I literally have no money and am in a practical panic. I brought my Chihuahua to the Emergency Vet 2 years ago with the same thing and he was able to fix it that day and we've had no more problems. That vet also told us that it was not worth doing surgery because it would likely not take. So I decided to look into this on some forums and was shocked to see a post titled "3 legs". From what I've read so far I know that I will definitely try the supplement with glucosamine. If anyone has any more updates or information I sure would appreciate it. Traci |
