Yorkie Puppy Hello My name is Karal, I don't have a Yorkie yet, but want a female puppy so bad. I have been looking for the right puppy for me. I have been doing a lot of searching and finding out a lot about the Yorkshire Terrier breed. If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it. Thank you |
Good luck finding a puppy! My advice?....Don't buy from a puppy mill or a broker! Find a good breeder :) Welcome to YT. |
Hi Karal and welcome to YT. You came to the right place to help in purchasing your first Yorkie. It is so important to go to a reputable breeder. Don't belive what anyone say's unless you have proof they breed only to better the breed. There are many backyard breeder's and puppymiller's all over the internet. Plus pet stores who buy from these kinds of people and then sell sick ones to you from the store. It's very sad but it's true. They also charge more $ than an actual good breeder would. Most of the time. They will tell you any thing you want to hear then ship you a sick puppy. We have several breeder's here on YT who you can contact and talk to. Check out the forum for Featured Yorkie Seller's or contact a Yorkie rescue either way you are guaranteed to get a healthy pet. Good luck to you. |
Thank you, your puppy is so cute, I can't wait to get my new Yorkie |
Thank you for the good advice, can't wait to get my new Yorkie. |

Welcome to YT!! |
glad to see you doing a little research before buying. There is a lot of great advice on here regarding purchasing a puppy. |
Welcome and good luck with your search. |
Welcome! I just wanted to add that when you do find the Yorkie that is for you, you will absolutely know it. I didn't think it was true but when I picked up Ranger, I knew he was made just for me! |
Hi there and welcome to YT! I'm glad to hear you are doing your research. I did (what I thought) was proper research too. It was nothing compared to what I've learned here on YT in the last 6 months. And I made some mistakes in my purchase. I don't love my Sophie any less, but the next purchase will be far more informed than the last. So...if you've not yet found your puppy..don't fret. This gives you more time on YT to make sure you a making a very proper and informed decision. There are many on here who will gladly give you a checklist of things to do and not to do when buying a puppy. And in the For Sale section you will find a thread concerning this very issue. Good luck and we'll be looking for pics when the new baby girl finally comes home! |

Ooohhhh ... thought your post was really going well until I hit that line. The Featured Yorkie Sellers here are just members who have paid extra and have a 1 year health contract -- doesn't say what will be provided under that contract or what the actual reputation of the seller may be. I just learned recently, after a few very controversial threads on health problems from Featured Sellers, that there was little required to make the list. So, I doubt you have any better chance of getting a healthy dog from the featured sellers list than from the general Yorkies for sale list, or other advertisement -- and none are guaranteed. There are rescues that will cost extra for life because of the health problems they have. That is why many wind up being rescues. There have been several here post how many hundreds, even thousands, of dollars they have spent on a rescue. Again, no guarantees. Even when they come with a health certificate, I have read here that puppies have arrived with viral problems, tracheal problems, and joint problems that should have been identified. There really is no complete guarantee that a puppy will stay healthy either. That is why it is so important that a person be financially prepared for emergency vet treatment. Whether they have insurance, a savings account or a dedicated credit card -- you need to have something to make sure health care is covered. I have read enough of your posts to know you feel this way too and you did not really mean "guaranteed" literally. You have always posted informative and courteous posts. I have learned a lot from you, even when your posts were addressed to others. You are one of the "good guys!" So, hope I am not stepping on toes, I just wanted to clarify that one point since it is a topic I really feel strongly about. I have posted the "Be prepared" threads a few times and continue to sing my song about anticipating the need for health care. I get frustrated when I read about yorkie owners not being able to affort critical care needed by their babies. Sorry for straying from topic and the OP's request for info..... To answer the OP -- A good source of reputable breeders is -- the YTCA Breeder Referral List. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America -- still no guarantees. |
