Yorkie acting strange
 
My yorkie is 6 years old.She has never had a litter.The last few days,she has been carrying around her squeaky dinosaur,whining the whole time.She cries to have it with her ALL the time,even when she goes to bed and even puts it under her as if she's nursing it! :eek:
I dont know what to do for her.We're thinking of getting her a small breed puppy to 'take care of', and for companionship,( Im home 98% of the time,but thinking about another inside dog for her to have a friend besides our black lab,who ofcourse stays outside). I have never seen her act like this and wanted any advice/info anyone has. Thanks in advance!

Is she spayed? If not it could be a false pregnancy.

What can be done for a female dog experiencing a false pregnancy? Just to have her spayed? How long will te symtoms last?

I have heard of dogs carrying around toys and crying because they are looking for a good place to hide their treasure. I don't know anything about false pregnancy. Maybe she just really loves this toy? Is it a new one?

Poor little thing. Did someone maybe tease her by taking her toy? She may think that they will take it away and keep it.

This does sound like a false pregnancy. The female will become very nurturing and will be nesting. Sounds like that is what she is doing with her toy. LRod

No,she's not spayed.She's never around male dogs.However,I do want/NEED to have her spayed.

No,it's not a new one...she's actually had this particular toy for about a year.If she happens to misplace it,she has a little stuffed AFLAC duck she'll do the same thing with:confused:
She just started doing this about a week ago.

She IS pitiful about it...NO way would we take her toys.She's the baby of the family.She's my bodyguard and I'm hers...LOL! In all seriousness,she is SO spoiled!She runs the house!:aimeeyork

Thats exactly what she's doing with her toy...nesting(making little beds,like a little cubby hole in the blankets of our bed,or hiding it in her bed,a towel after bathtime,that sort of thing). So,what brings this on?Horomones? Looks like it's time for a visit to the vet!

I had a black lab growing up that did the same thing, I was too young to pay attention to when it stoped. Im shure you can ask the vet.

You should have her spayed as soon as possible, if female dogs don't have any litters, they can get a uterine infection. I know it happened to me and the vet says you have to have them spayed . I am surprised your vet didn't tell you that.

I have a 6 month old boy and he does the same thing with his tiger toy. He carries it around in his mouth crying and then goes and ruts in his blanket or bed and buries it under the covers. I think its just them having fun and hiding their toys!!! =)

No,he didn't tell me,but I just did some research about spaying and I read about what you're talking about. I will have her spayed within the next two weeks.As far as false pregnancy,I read their mammary glands swell,too.She's not doing that at all. So far,today,she's not missed the toy(it's still in my daughters' bed).I figured I'd leave it and see how she reacts.So far,she hasn't missed it and just seems to want me to love on her...

Yes perhaps she does need to be spayed.Tia loves her bear , she was spayed at 6mths , she is now 11 mths but the way she cares for that bear is so sweet.
He seems to be her best friend(she insists he goes to her bed with her) her lover lol(she gives him the occasional hump) and I don't know if you saw my thread the other day but she stood under the washing line and cried for him because he was pegged up .lol
Sometimes I look at her and think she would have been a lovely caring mummy and it makes me feel sad that she won't get the chance.:(

hey, glad i read ur post. i was getting worried with my lulu. she's the last one not to get spayed yet, and recently she's been acting the same thing like urs. She's been carrying around her toy squirrel, whimpering, holding on it, digging blankets, etc. But i guess it's just part of mother nature, lol. But hope everything is ok!

My dachshund had two false pregnancies. Both times she staked out a place in my closet, made her a little bed with some item of my clothes and gathered a few prize toy animals as her puppies. She would stay in there all the time. We would have to go get her to make her go outside for potty and to eat something. First time, we took her to the vet wondering if she was pregnant and maybe they had not spayed her right or something. She had actually gotten swollen teats with a little fluid in them. But the vet reassured us no, it was a false pregnancy. He said he could give her something if the teats became too swollen but then did not. She would eventually stop tending her babies. I am thinking it would usually last about 2 weeks. She did stop doing this after we had other dogs in the house. So, maybe she was lonely and convinced herself she was going to have puppies because of that.

Yes, please have her spayed. By chance, is she having any discharge? If so, take her to the vet asap.

I just went through an emergency spay due to uterine infection (pyometra)....and my pup went from fine to terrible in a very short period of time (24 hours). Sorry....do not want to scare you. Mine was a breeding pup and pretty young to have this happen. I would want anyone to go through what we did.

Roxie will do this for the first few days after she gets through heat. She doesnt only care for one of her toys she takes about 3 of them to my closet and just loves on them, she wont wrestle or play with them, silly girls!
