Barking a lot....
 
:animal36Hi everyone. This post is for my friend who is a mommy to two adorable furbabies. Lucy (the alpha) is 2 and Desi is 1. Lucy has been barking a lot lately. At anyone who walks into the house...or any noise outside. She really doesn't know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help stop or lessen the barking? We appreciate your help.

Sounds like my house!!!:) I just started whistle training my yorkies. I started by just whistle and treat. Now when they bark excessively then I whistle and they come for a treat. It still does not work all the time, but it's a work in progress!!! I dont mind them barking (thats just what yorkies do) it's when they keep barking for a loooooong time!!

I have read several people here say to use coins in an aluminum can and shake it every SINGLE time they bark. Shake it until they stop barking and then say Quiet or somthing and praise them. They key (I have heard) is just to be very consistent and pretty soon you'll just have to say Quiet w/out using the can.

Boobah will bark at the drop of a hat! She hates horns, whistles, bells, a knock at the door, the people talking loudly in the townhome next door, the phone ringing, etc. But I will try the coins in the can procedure. She has a horrendous bark for such a little yorkie but I love her!

You could also keep a spray bottle handy. It seems cruel, but it really isn't...it just distracts them. Pair the spray with a loud noise/command and soon you will only need to use the command! (similar to post above)

I've used the coins in the can trick as well as the water spray. I spray it right in between his eyes, he hates it and it shuts him up real fast lol

I have also used the pennies-in-aluminum can trick. It worked quite well for a while, but I tried it yesterday and Buster wanted to play with the can! It stops them from barking, but not always for very long since they have pretty short attention spans (I have 2 yorkies). Yesterday, Buster actually wanted to play with it instead of stopping or running away, so I take it that he's not too startled by it anymore. He did stop barking while he was checking out the noisy can he wanted to play with though!

Sounds like Chloe. It worked for a short time, like a day or two only, then she just barked at the can!! Ugh. I also tried the spray bottle, that didn't work at all and she ended up getting soaked. She just looked at me like "what's up with that spray thingy Mom? Have you lost your mind?" :eek:
