Can't bring my puppy home yet??? Worried..

I was scheduled to bring my Yorkie puppy home tomorrow (@ 8 weeks old). Called our breeder today and she says Callie~Lou is not eating and drinking on her own as well as the others yet and needs a little more time before going to her new home. I've read that Yorkies shouldn't come home until they are at least 12 wks. old...yet I have friends who have gotten them at six weeks and some even younger (though I do agree anything younger than six wks. is entirely too young). Should I be worried about my puppy? She is the smallest of the litter...the "runt", if you will. Could that be the problem? She has been to the vet and has checked out fine. I have visited her several times and she is VERY energetic~...her hair is getting wavier and 'fuzzier'...she is as cute as a button, but I admit she is very tiny...(not sure of her exact weight right now) but my breeder estimates she will be 31/2 to 4lbs adult weight. Should I be worried....or just more patient?:aimeeyork:confused:

Honestly, I'd be very patient with such a small pup. I've seen some breeders keep their tiny puppies even up to 16 weeks. The longer the puppy spends with the mother and litter mates, the better it will be for the puppy by learning many things such as bite inhibition, etc. I know it's tough because you want to hold your baby right now, but it's certainly in your baby's best interests!

Just keep visiting her and by the time you know it, she'll be home in your arms! ;)

Thank you. I know you are right and that does make me feel better.
I am just overly anxious to get her~ She is so adorable~

Your babies are adorable too! So cute and I love their names~
And your webpage is awesome!
We are in the midst of a celebrity!!:coolpics:

It's so great that you're so anxious to get your new baby but staying with her momma and other litter mates IS the best thing for her long term health and wellness. Don't sweat it, just take this time to learn all you can and get ready for your new pup. You'll be glad you gave her the time with momma.

OMG~ Where did you get that adorable dress for your baby?
That is the cutest picture ever! I must have one for my baby!
Do tell!!

I would hope the breeder will keep her til she is 12 weeks old. Taking puppies at 6 weeks or even younger as you mentioned in your post is just plain abusive. Count your blessings that at least the breeder decided to keep her longer and wants her eating and drinking on her own well before she leaves her mom and siblings. I know it is difficult to wait, especially after you have got to visit a few times and started to bond. But you will have many, many years to come with your little one if you let her get a good start.

Best to you and Callie-Lou!

Anything less than 12 weeks is TOO EARLY! Just be patient...she'll be home soon!

I agree we got Laddy at 9 weeks and it was to young. I had to force feed and water him for days. I thought sure I was going to lose him. I know years ago we all thought 8 weeks was the perfect age but breeders today have seen that it is to young.

I, too agree with 12 weeks. Thanks so much for the compliments about my babies. They are my true loves, well along with my boyfriend!!! And, I am *maybe* a G List celebrity. Have only been on television 5 or 6 times! I really just stay at home and take care of our house, our babies and my boyfriend now. :)

I can't wait until you get your baby!! Keep us updated with pictures. She is such a doll.

I'm sorry you can't get Callie yet...hopefully she will start eating and drinking better soon! I know the wait must be so hard. Congrats on your new baby girl! I love the name you have given her!

To me it shows what a good breeder you have keeping her until she is ready.
Be patient, I know its hard but your baby is with her mum and its the best place at the moment. Tia was 13 wks when I got her.:D

Lorriekay 06-02-2009 07:31 AM

Definitely just be patient and don't worry :)
We are talking about VERY small puppies here. I got my maltipoo LOLA when she was 9 weeks old. The breeder said she was eating solid food and when I got her home she Was!
She was very tiny but eating the tiny dry kibble just fine. I was feeding her Baby Dog Ultra Nutro or something like that.
No problem
UNTIL I took her to the vet to get vaccinated.
After that she wouldn't eat Anything .. uggh!
I had to hand feed her for the next 2 weeks to prevent hypoglycemia. She never experienced an episode because I was diligent.
I tried waiting till she would get very hungry to eat and she still wouldn't eat on her own.
She did well and then one day just started eating.
She is healthy and strong :)
grew to be 3 lbs 14 oz, just under 4 lbs.
If puppy can be with it's mother .. the longer the better. Especially if it is getting any milk from momma.

It is so hard waiting even longer to get your pup! I know!

But it will be worth it in the end :) ! I promise.
