Disliking kibble - anyone else have this problem? My two pups are very choosey about their food. I really want them to eat kibble because I have read about how bad Yorkshire Terrier's teeth can get. I've tried to break it up and moisten it with chicken broth, warm water, or even mix it with soft dog food. I even mix it with boiled chicken and their soft food but they nose through it and only eat the soft food/chicken mixture. I've read about only putting the kibble down at feeding time and only giving the puppy 30 minutes to eat it and taking it away, but I just can't do it! I'm not sure if it's the type of kibble, but I use Innova puppy right now. I leave a bowl of kibble down for them throughout the day and they get a mixture of soft food/boiled chicken and kibble twice a day. The kibble that's mixed into their breakfast and dinner is always left on the plate. They love the boiled chicken breast and the Innova soft food. They do, however, take approximately 3-4 pieces of kibble a day and snack on it, but they won't stand and eat the kibble consistently. I give them lots of dental chews and brush their teeth once a week. Are they getting enough nutrition from the Innova puppy canned food mixed with the boiled chicken? Should I try a different brand of kibble? Also, is there anything I should be doing differently for preventative dental care? Thanks in advance, let me know if anyone else has or had this problem, or even if it's that much of a problem at all! |
I felt that Missy wasn't eating enough kibble, so I homecook for her now. She does still snack on the kibble a little, but her main diet is homecooked. I just make sure that I'm diligent about brushing her teeth. |
I had this problem when Laci was teething, she would NOT chew the Wellness, I think it hurt her teeth, I did switch to Eagle pack hollistic puppy , she ate it much much better, it is very very tiny and I think she could swallow it with out really chewing it.. |
Mine were very picky about what kibble they would eat also and I had to experiment with different brands untill I found one they would eat. I give them a little moist food in the morning. It is fine to give the chicken but if human food is more than 10 % of their diet they need suppliments. I brush Chachi and Jewels teeth and use petzlife and they are over 4 yrs old and havent needed a dental yet. The vet said their teeth looked great |
They get about half of a boiled chicken breast per day, each. Supplements sound like a great idea, even if they are eating less than 10% of human food, are supplements still okay to give? Does anyone have any recommendations of types of supplements and/or brands for puppies? |
You can give them but they dont really need them they get it in their dog food. Hopefully someone who homecooks can tell you what suppliments to give. I only homecook about twice a month so I dont suppliment |
Ugh! .... I am having a battle royal with my two puppies about this all of a sudden they're hating their dry food They used to eat it fine now they turn up their nose I had mixed up eggs with it ...now they hate eggs I had mixed a little wet puppy food with it and they spit out the kibble like they were olive pits  I am at the point where I even have to supplement their diets with a high calorie supplement |
