Need Help May have to Rehome my Golden My youngest son is so full of allergies it is crazy. We have been taking him to the allergist for over a year now and this last time we took him she told us that he was severely allergic to dogs and that Star, our Golden Retriever, was probably the one causing him the most problems even though we do not allow her in his bedroom. They cannot even offer shots for dog allergies as an option. We love Star to death and don't want to lose her but I don't know what else to do. My poor baby has had it so rough. He has had 2 sinus surgeries since March, been on 4 antibiotics since then, and takes tons of prescription allergy medications. He has chronic sinus infections due to his allergies and croup a couple of times a year. I guess I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Maybe I just needed to vent. Not really sure. |
I honeslty don't know what to tell you but i feel your pain and i hope everything works out for you!! sending some hugs and kisses to your son as well i hope he gets better... |

My son is severely allergic too! I did not find this out until he was older. He suffered so much when he was little. I feel very guilty about what he went through as a baby and young child. He was constantly sick. We had cats. When The MD. gave us a refferral , My child was 14 yrs old. The allergest did the skin tests and that is when the truth came out. CATS were the number one severe allergy. Along with DUST, Trees, and so many other things! He has to take shots, enhallers , and medications to this day! Fortunately I had gotten rid of the cats long before we discovered the allergies. He still loves cats. But , can't pick them up or pet them . It is a difficult decision to make when it's a beloved pet , your child is allergic to. If the meds are not working, and your child is suffering , then It is not right to keep the dog inside at least? Perhaps anther family member could take your golden ? At least then the dog would still be a member of the family. I am very sorry you have to make such a difficult decision. |
I wish I could give her to another family member but my mom and sister both live in an apartment and there is no way that they could take her. I don't even know where to start to find a good home for her. I don't want to give her to a rescue for them to just sell her to someone. I want her to go to a good loving family. I did have one family in mind but they just had a baby and don't want to take in another dog right now. I can't keep her outside because she hates the heat and it wouldn't be fair to her. I know what I need to do jsut don't know what route to take to get there. |
I'm sorry :( What a tough situation. I LOVE Goldens and grew up with a Retriever named Daisy. I would take her in a heartbeat if I could but unfortunately, my step-dad is allergic and I'm currently living at home. |
Goldens were my life for many years. the best breed for kids, imo. Goldens do not like the heat, thanks to their coat. You really can contact the Golden Rescue. They do close checks on homes. They are devoted people. Goldens are easy dogs so they are also easy to foster. Good luck hun, the decision is so difficult. They are like our children. But now your human child is suffering. And there is no comparison or choice when it comes to our blood children. We do what we have too. She will end up in a good home. Goldens are so easy to love and are very adaptable. Just curious, why is allergy shots not an option, is he too young? I am allergic to both dogs and cats, cats more than dogs. I took allergy shots for several years and take allergy medicine. I no longer have to take the shots, just the allergy medicine and I am fine with it. Dander is the main cause for allergies. They make shampoos to cut down the dander and if you feed a supplement for shedding that helps as well. But it still may never be enough if he is highly allergic. I love Goldens, they are such sweet, gentle dogs!! If you were closer I would take her. I am so sorry you have this difficult decision to make, I know how heartbreaking it must be. I am sure whatever you do will be best for everyone. |

could you put an ad on Craigslist and interview a family or two , go see thier home and put down exactly what you are looking for for placement Like you want a family with children , a fenced in back yard, make sure they have a vet , they have a job ect.. it is possible for you to take them same steps a rescue would take to place her!! |
Have you exhausted all the usual things to reduce allergens? Is there a hepa filter air purifier in your son's room and other places in the house where he spends a lot of time? Are you dusting/vacuuming/laundering things all the time? Washing/brushing the dog often? There are lots of articles online about steps to take to make it more bearable but all that may not be enough. You could try them though before you have to give up your pup. I had to read up on it before we adopted Teddy. I have severe allergies and asthma and its awful to not be able to breathe. I'm sorry you're in such a difficult position. Good luck to you all.
