Do I need a crate inside a pen?? Hmmm....I have an exercise pen ordered for my puppy, so do I still need to keep his little crate in side the pen, or just a small bed?? Sorry, I'm stll confused about certain things! |
I think you'll need the crate to assist in potty training. They don't usually go potty in a crate but they will in an open xpen. Once trained, I think you'll be fine to go just with the bed. |
The crates are nice it becomes like their little den but a bed if fine also its your choice |
If you are trying to crate train...then yes. If not, no it's not necessary. |
I think I just get mixed up with this crate training..is that what most owners do? This is my first puppy that I am keeping entirely indoors for potty. |
I think it's the best way to potty train them. Putting them in the crate when you can't watch them because they won't pee or poop in the crate unless left there for too long. As soon as you get the puppy out of the crate take her outside. When she's done doing her business you can give her a reward (I usually use boiled chicken, tiny pieces). Then you can have her run around the house while supervising her. When you can't watch her, in the crate....immediately out of the crate she goes outside....they learn pretty quick but you have to be consistent... |
If your training for indoors you dont need a crate. You put the pee pad in the xpen |

Yes, That is what I mean! So I don't need the crate, just a bed right? So I leave his little bed, pee/pad ( I have a Wizdog on the way ) and food and water in his pen..no crate..right? I've read so many threads, I think I confuse myself to tell you the truth  |

The only thing thats bad about using a wizdog rather than pads is you only have one. So when your pup is out of the pen your gonna have to move the wizdog out of the pen also. If you were using pads you would put one in the pen and one outside it |

do you have a hard plastic carrying case for your puppy? it's good to have one for transportation. and you can also use it as a crate. (if you decided that you need a crate.) :) |
One thing you might want to consider.... Is your baby going to sleep in YOUR bed at night?? or in a crate? If it will be sleeping in a crate at night, I would use a crate (with the door open) inside of the x-pen instead of a bed. Your baby will use the crate as his private little safe haven. I used a crate inside the xpen with my two puppies as they were growing and it made it really easy to just cover the crate at night for sleeping. |
Holy cow, I'm confused:eek:..He won't be sleeping in my bed until he is totally potty trained..and my bed is high, so I would be scared he would fall off and hurt himself..at least until he is much bigger. |

i also have a high bed, and milu sleeps with me, but i REALLY recommend NOT doing so. it's a bad idea. too dangerous. i should have never let her start sleeping on the bed. but now it's hard to break the habit. |
I didn't think a crate was needed, even if he is not sleeping with me..I thought a little doggie bed would be okay..Posted above, a crate was suggested so he would have private safe haven to go to..I guess that is what is confusing me. |
