Mojo has to go back....
 

I am really sad as I am writing these lines. My new puppy, Mojo, is going back to the breeders we got him from.
Today we brought him to the vet for his first check up. The health of the puppy is fine, but he doesn't appear to be a purebreed yorkshire terrier (as the breeders indicated).
We purchased him not only as another pet, but also for a possibility to breed him with our baby Lulu. When breeding, it's important for the male to be smaller than the female. Well, at 10 weeks Mojo is 3.10 Lb and Lulu is 4 Lb. at 5 months. And since he doesn't appear as a purebreed, but as a mix of some sort (and we're not sure what kind of a mix), the puppies won't be purebreed also, of course. :(

So we contacted the breeders, and I'll be returning him home tonight. I am very sad, as Mojo is a very cute puppy, but am also grateful that we haven't gotten too attached to him yet. I really hope he will find a good forever home.

What did the breeder say? Was he not going to be coming home with papers as well? That is a shame if you were led to believe one thing only to turn out to be another.

It's possible he is all yorkie but just poorly bred. Of course you still wouldn't want to breed him in that case but there are so many poor representations of the breed (including my own who I love to pieces) who are pure yorkie. It's smart for you to recognize that he isn't good breeding stock but I bet it's really hard to let him go. Have you spent much time in the breeders forum? There is tons of great information there.:)

I'm sorry that you have to part with Mojo, just curious did the vet tell you he wasn't purbred? Did he noy come with papers?

The vet couldn't say for sure, but it would be either not a pure breed puppy, or a poorly bred one. He couldn't say it's not a puebreed without conducting tests, but he's been around for a long while and has seen many yorky puppies. And Mojo doesn't look like one. He looks like a mix.

The litter is CKC registered, but he was the last puppy and we didn't see the rest of the litter. We were also told by the breeders that Mojo weights much less than he really does — we checked with the vet today. :(

So yeah... It's a good lesson for me, but it also makes me very sad, for Mojo and for breeders who just say things to make you buy the dog. But it's also my fault — I didn't go to a reputable breeder, but somebody who claimed to sell a "purebreed" puppy. And I need to recognize that and learn from it.

Oh wow, lesson learned the hard way. Sounds like you have a good vet that is helping you head the right direction. Does your vet have any recommendations of breeders for you to go through :)

I don't know from experience, but from reading her on YT it won't be an easy task to aquire an excellent representation of the breed with breeding rights. Usually I have read about the necessity to find mentor that is a great breeder and go from there. Mind you I have no experience with breeding but do have an interest in possibly getting into it when I retire

I'm sorry your having to send Mojo back. I recommend sticking with AKC only in the future.

You also need to be careful about judging weight. I know our Krissy was 9 lbs and we bred her with a 4 lb male. He kids ranged from 16 lbs down to our Kayla who is 4.3 lbs. We bred Kayla to our 4.5 lb Biewer and her 8 week old son Godzilla is over 3 lbs already. He will be over 10 lbs I'm sure. The runt is 1.1lbs.

One of our Mandy's sons was 4.8 lbs at 4 months and he is 5.5 lbs at 4 years old.

The point is they can go back generations as far as size. I never tell anyone I can even guess the size of my puppies.

Sorry you had a bad experience but you should pay the extra to get a AKC registered male and find out about parents, grandparents, etc. to be sure you know what your getting.

We just got another puppy yesterday. Kaia, is 17 weeks and only 2.5 lbs. She's very small framed and her back legs are definitely tiny. The male we got yesterday is a solid 2.7 lbs at 10 weeks. He's absolutely adorable and although I love my Kaia so much, his sturdiness and larger size don't worry me as much as Kaia's frailty.

Point well taken! The thing is, we were told that the mother is AKC registered and the father is CKC registered. Both of the parents looked great. We didn't ask about the grandparents though...

In any case, sweet Mojo is gone. I feel sad, but I do feel I did the right thing. I will be looking for another puppy, and this time will be checking everything much more seriously. I am happy we got our money back (minus the vet appointment and the vaccine we gave Mojo because he was due).

If you guys have recommendations for reputable and trustworthy breeders preferably in Northern CA, please let me know. I would greately appreciate it.

I can't help you with the above but it is so sad that you can't trust SOME people.

At least you do tell people you cannot even guess the size of your pups, but don't you see a problem with that? The reason people have trouble buying puppies that wind up way over standard is just this situation. When you breed a 9 pound female your line is bound to have puppies way out of standard. This is how people see parents of pups and think all will be well, only to have their puppies turn out as yours did -- up to 16 pounds!!!! And now another generation down, who knows how big your Godzilla (very appropriate) will wind up if he is already over 3 pounds at 8 weeks. To keep the breed standard, you have to make sure to ONLY breed standard dogs. IF the pups came from out-of-standard dogs, they should not be bred either. You need to at least see that the previous two generations were all in standard before considering dogs for breeding. You can't just pick one puppy from a litter and think they are breeding stock. I have learned a lot from this site and don't pretend to be an expert by any means. But logic dictates you will get out what you put in.

Sounds like you have been breeding for a while and probably care a great deal for your dogs. But maybe it is time to reconsider which dogs should be bred. We all continue to learn. Sometimes if you look at things from a different perspective, you see a better course to take.
