Peanut butter... is it bad ? [/B] Afternoon everyone!!! Well I finally get my little baby "chopper " this Saturday, I am driving 5 hours one way to pick him up then back..... I already went and bought him his bowls, toys and a medium kong.... But I have a question..... I was telling my wonderful hubby that once he finished the treats that the kongs came with I could fill it up with "peanut butter", but he says "peanut butter" is bad for all types of dogs because if it gets stuck up on top of the roof of their mouths they can choke because they don't have fingers like us to remove it... Now I am weary about it.. any advice on this???? :( |
I don't know but I put a tiny bit in Brutus' kong and he got diarrhea from it. So I stopped giving it to him. |
Congrats on the new baby!!! I know how long your drive is going to be, I just drove 7 hours one way to pick up my Lexy last weekend. About the peanut butter, I have given it to both of my dogs and they seem to be fine with it. My vet gave me a Kong for Lexy to play with and told me peanut butter was ok to put in there (I just wouldn't put too much too often because it is really fatty). You can also try freezing the peanut butter in there overnight. It will feel really good on his teething gums and it will taste good too! |
I forgot to say CONGRATS!!!! |
i give maisy natural peanut butter once in a while. one time i put some mixed with cheerios in her baby kong and she loved it. I'm not sure if its good or bad though. I was at one of Maisy's obedience classes and the recommend squished bananna too..so thats another idea..and if you want it to last longer, freeze the bananna!! |
Congrats on the new addition! I give Teddy peanut butter all the time and he has never had any sort of negative reaction to it. So, as the others said as long as you don't over do the amount it should be fine to give it to him every once in a while. |
I give bentley peanut better every once in awhile! |
lillissy82790 thanks for mentioning "natural peanut butter". I didn't even think to mention using that instead because it doesn't have Hydrogenated oils and sugar in it. Much, much healthier for them. |
My little Zeus suffered with pancreatitis and it all started after he had peanut butter. The vet said that peanut butter has a lot of protein and fat and it isn't good for a little dog's digestive. |
I give Bridget a little peanut butter in her Kong toy once in awhile as a treat. I agree, peanut butter is quite fatty so I don't do it very often. Never thought about freezing squished up banana in the kong toy... i'm doing that tonight - what a great idea! |
Peanut butter is a no no I was told as just like humans they can be allergic to it. :) dianne and prudence :) |
Truthfully, I don't know how to answer this question, but I will answer it the best that I can. Peanut butter (including almond butter, etc.) is good for us humans because it provides protein, essential oils, and calories. From a standpoint, I don't see how giving them a small spoon of peanut butter would be bad. In fact, it can be good for them because of the 3 benefits mentioned above. The benefit from oils and calories would be the same as feeding them Nutrical. As for excessive protein, I don't believe this is true. http://www.calorieking.com/foods/foo...ion=3&partner= In a single tablespoon of peanut butter, there is approximately 4 grams of protein. 4 grams is nothing! I've fed my Yorkie a serving of salmon or chicken, and that was just a bit smaller than the size of a deck of cards. This amount equates to approximately 18 to 20 grams of protein. |
I give Maximus the Kong peanut butter..but then he got sick of it..thank God because it made his poop yellow..it is alot thinner then human peanut butter IMO |
I give my dogs peanut butter and they are fine with it. They make a dog peanut butter that comes in a squeeze can for kongs. |
I see, well interesting to know.... what is "natural peanut butter" ... any brand specifically? Where can you buy it? I guess to be safe I will start with the squashed bananas then take it from there.... OMG I am soooooo excited... I leave tomorrow afterwork and then I pick him up Saturday morning. We are going to a town that is known for their beautiful lakes and we are going to go sight seeing for a bit can't wait... he finally went outside for his first time yesterday and the breeder said he loved it.. can't wait to see how he likes soft warm sand!! By the way he is 9 1/2 almost 10 weeks this week!! |
