Liver Shunt Test I am bringing my new baby, Rambo, home next Thursday evening. He will be eight weeks old and has had no problems at all and No hypoglycemia so she is allowing me to pick him up. I am taking him to the vet at 8:00 a.m. Friday for a well-baby check and a liver shunt test. The kicker is this: The vet said not to let him eat or drink past 6:00p.m. on Thursday. That is going to be really hard and I will have to watch him like a hawk for hypoglycemia because I know he should eat every two or three hours at that age. What in the world can I do? The vet said they would do the blood draw then wait two hours and do another one then they would feed him. Does this sound right!!!!!!!! I thought the Liver Shunt test was a simple blood test. Apparently not and I am afraid not to get one. He has a health guarantee provided I have him vet checked within 48 hours after recieving him. I am scared to death for the poor little thing to have to fast. Almost to the point of not having it done but I know I need to. Can anyone calm me down? Thanks |
Your vet is doing the test correctly. You might prefer to wait until your pup is a little bit older so that he's better able to stand the fasting. You might call your vet and ask if Nutrical will effect the test results. If not, give him Nutrical before bed and upon waking. Once the first tube of blood is drawn, he can eat. |
I think I would probably talk to your vet and express your concern about the fasting thing. If he thinks it will be OK, then I would trust his opinion. If he thinks you should wait, then I would wait. Either way, your vet should know best! ;) A question though: Is Liver Shunt considered a genetic disease? |

I have already had a lengthy discussion with the vet and he does think it will be alright. This vet has been our friend and vet for twenty years. My husband breeds beagles so we are at the vet a lot. Plus, I have a mini-poo and a mini-pug in the house. So we are close with our vet and I do trust his judgement. I am just really anxious about my new baby because since i have been a member on YT, I have learned that so many things can go wrong. Thanks for your reply |
Thanks, I really didn't know that. I totally understand your fears. These little guys are sooo fragile, and all we want is the best for them. Just trust your instinct and I'm sure everything will be just fine! :) |

Liver shunt is usually guranteed for one year from date of adoption I wouldnt fast that baby so young...please think twice and re-read your contract. you have 12 months to do the test if it's in your contract for one year against hereditary disease ....liver shunt would be considered hereditary... hope this helps Kimberly |

You might want to read this http://www.malteseonly.com/shunt.htm go half way down the page and you will see this is a genetic disorder so I would think you would be covered. These people do alot of research before they put something on the net. |
They definitely recommend you not breed the parents again if one pup has this. |
Bile acid tests should really be done at or after 10 weeks of age. The breeder should keep this pup until its old enough for the test. If you do it at 8 weeks and its high you will have to repeat it again in a month or so. You probably won't get the results in 48 hours either. You should ask the breeder to hold the pup until its old enough to test and have her do the test before placing it with you. If they don't want to pay for it you can, but it should be done by the breeder. Of course this is JMO. ;) It is considered genetic and you should have a guarantee against it. |
