New Yorkie Owner Hello all! I want to take this time to introduce myself. I just bought a puppy yesterday and I already love him. He is 10 weeks old, and has gotten two shots already. I have him in a crate in my living room. Since he is still a puppy he sleeps most of the time. I have a pretty big apartment with hardwood floors. How often should I let him out of his crate? Any other tips or advice from the veterans? All info is appreciated. |
Welcome to YT and to the wonderful world of Yorkies! I am not a good one to give advice on crates as the only time we use ours is taking them to the vet. I have let the crate stay open and sometimes one of the puppies goes in there to take a nap, but I don't close the door. Mine spend most of the day running around or curling up with me in my chaise. When I leave or when I need to do something where I can't be watching them close, I put them in their playyard. (It is one of those plastic fence-like things sold for children). They have toys, a bed, pee pads, and food & water in there -- but they still prefer to be out with me. So, I let them as much as I can. My pup are 12 1/2 weeks old. Yorkies are VERY social dogs. They like to be with their people. |
Oh welcome! Congrats on the new baby! While you are still trying to potty train make sure he doens't have free reign of the apt. They go a lot when they are pups. Get an excersize pen and have his bed and food bowls on one side and pee pads on the other. Always put him in there when you can't keep a close eye on him. Otherwise let him hang out with you all the time. Get to training right away. Touch his feet while he sleeps so he gets used to that. Start combing his fur gently. Talk to him gently while you do everything. any questions just ask! There's lots of knowledgeable people here on YT! Post some pics soon!!! |
congrats on your new puppy and welcome to yt. cant wait to see pics. |
Hi! :wavey: :welcome4: :yorkiesar As has been said, Yorkies are very social dogs and your puppy will want to be with you all the time. But if you can't be watching him closely then a small area that is safe for him is the best thing for him. If he's going to be left on his own for several hours, then a crate may not be the best option. An ex-pen, specially designed for dogs, is a great, safe option. Have you decided on a name yet? Please post some pictures when you can. Good Luck and don't hesitate to ask questions, there are so very many knowledgeable people here. :) |
I failed crate training also... I agree if you cant be with them use a gate to put them in the kitchen or small room with a pee pad , toys , food and water.. I wouldnt want to be in a cage all day so I didnt do it to my dog.. those Xpens are great and confine movement when you cant watch them and they need to go out, again a put a pee pad , toys and food and water...;) |
Welcome and Congrats! I never used a crate for Lola but definitely limited her space to one room at a time...good luck.. :) |

i would let him out of the crate as often as possible, but only when you can watch him to make sure he doesn't go potty in the house. i recommend pee pad training in the house, especially since you live in an apartment. it is really convenient to have a pee pad trained dog!!! you can check out the health/diet section in this forum as well. there are many options when it comes to food and you want to pick a good food for your baby. if you have any questions, just ask. :D |
Welcome and congrats on your yorkie. I do use crates and I have 4 yorkies. They do really great with them. They really are comfortable in them. I really only use them at night. I have 4 lined up in my room. Each of my yorkies know exactly which one is their ROOM. I say go to your rooms and they go straight in. It is really helpful when someone comes to my door or if I have company and I don't want all 4 of them kissing and jumping all over them. Now it took some training and they sometimes venture into someone elses room...just to check out the accommodations, but they eventually end up in their own room at bedtime. Sometimes if the doors are shut they panick a little and are not quite sure where to go. But If they are scared or hungry they know exactly where to go. I think they find comfort in their rooms. My youngest two are 14 weeks and 16 weeks and they just a few nights ago started sleeping through th 2am poop time. Thank goodness. But it is important to get up with them in the night. At 10 weeks there is no way they can go all night without a potty break. But don't worry they will outgrow that. Well good luck, I hope you have as much success as I have. ;) |
1 Attachment(s) I use a crate also for Tia.When she was a puppy(shes 11 mths now) it was her safe haven. I made it real cosy for her and she loved it. She still uses it now but only at night as she is a little bigger now (5.5lbs) and she has a grown up bed for during the day and crated at night. Ive found it a god send and wasn't keen on them at first but things like traveling as someone has already said or recently when we stayed overnight in a hotel I knew she would be safe in there.heras a pic of how I tried to make it more cosy for her.
