Recommend a harness please..and collar question 1)Rather than a lease we would prefer a harness ..can someone recommend one for my 11 week old boy... 2) I got a collar for him..wore it for a few minutes and he was irritated..he would use his paw to scratch it..so i removed it..this is first time he is wearing it..how should i get him to get used to it? |
I bought my Abby a Buddy Belt harness and like it. I never leave a collar on her. I do take out to potty with her collar and leash but always walk her with her harness. I need to tell you what happened the other day. My mom left her collar on her because she had a hard time getting it on. I was in the other room and I heard my baby crying. My mom yelled for me. I went to see what was wrong and found that Abby had gotten her lower jaw under the collar and it was caught tight in her mouth. I had such a difficult time trying to get her free. She was scared and very uncomfortable, and crying. It was in her mouth and pulling on both sides of her mouth. I finally did get it off. Poor baby. So, please be very careful about leaving a collar on your little one. |
A Collar and leash is never a good idea on a toy breed due to their fragile necks..and can cause collapsing trachea. A harness is much safer for our little ones...I'm a big fan of the Puppia Jacket style harness...I get mine from a great seller on Ebay...there are quite a few sellers on here that sell fab harnesses...i'm sure someone will point you in the right direction!;) |
Chattiesmom here on Yorkie Talk sells a silk step in harness that looks very nice. I think it would be more gentle on the coat. I am thinking about ordering one from her. You might want to check into those. Hope this helps. |
collar I never leave a collar on in the house.....but outside i have it on because it holds their tags.....I have a harness for them but don't like either of them, I'm ordering from Chattiesmom at the recomendation from others here on YT, they all love them |

can you PM me a ebay link? |
Paging Chattiesmom ...Please PM me... Thanks to all for replies |
Chattiesmom's harnesses are beautiful, adjustable, and work well with every yorkie. You could probably get one now that would continue to adjust for a long time. The ones I get for Ginger and Bernie (13 pounders) have been adjusted to fit some fosters as little as 3.5 lbs. They are pretty, safe and secure. |

Of course, you will have to buy several harnesses and collars as he grows, but harnesses are so much better than collars for Yorkies. We use a harness for leading and for carseat time....... we use a collar just to keep id tags on (but you could put id tag on harness if you wanted to) I have heard that Chattiesmom has some wonderful harnesses....light weight and made of silk to prevent hair breakage........ I am actually waiting to get some pics from her of some with crystals on them. |
I'm interested in one of these harnesses also so I am bumping up this thread. |
Chattiesmom makes the best harnesses/leashes IMO....I use nothing else on my baby and they are made to your furbabies measurements so that they can grow with them. She is also wonderful for repairs to them if you baby just happens to chew them (as mine did two times  ) I highly recommend then !!!! |
I use harnessess all the way too. i'll need to check in with chattiesmom about her harness too . I've used gentle leader that I like, and anther one that fit soft underneath the arms. I also have a retractable leash for Suzi. Using the gentle leader , and now Suzi stops , waits for the leash to have more slack , before she goes. She is very smart! I did not teach her to do that! She learned how to do it on her own ! I've never used a collar on her. I have heard that they are not good for Yorkie's sensitve throats or necks. She does not wear anything in the house either. i place her tags right on the harness, and have no problems. |
