Getting New Baby....Have questions I have decided on getting a new baby boy. My questions are: How do I introduce him to Buttons :animal36 ? Are there any shots he should not have at 6 weeks? The person I am getting him from wants me to take him next week, he'll only be 7 weeks. (they are going to Hawaii) What can I do to make the transition easier for him? His mom is only down the block so if all does not go well I can always take him back to her? |

Buy a little blanket and put it with the puppies and their mom for the next week. Then, when you bring him home with you, he will have something that smells familiar. It is difficult with a puppy, but it helps a lot to take them for a walk during their first meeting. A 20 minute walk will let them know that they are part of the same pack and then you can simply walk them into the house together. Dogs only walk with their friends and family members, so walking together uses up their energy and makes them friends. When they are nice and tired, head home and don't make a big thing about the puppy being in the house for the first time. Just act like this is how it has always been. 7 weeks is a little young, but I got June at eight weeks and she has done very well. At 14 weeks, she can sit, walk on a leash and we are working on down, stay and sitting on her hind legs. Do some research about dogs that age so that you know what to expect. Oh, and your present dog will teach her her social skills, so don't worry. (Given that your current dog is well socialized.) Good luck! |
new pupper I'm getting a new puppy as well (June 19th...yay) and am a little worried because my current male is def. an alpha, and the puppy will be a little older at 14 weeks (we're going on our honeymoon and didn't think it was fair to the puppy to live with us for a week and then be babysat by someone else). I've heard that we should introduce them on a walk as well. Any suggestions for making sure my dog will be more accepting? Thanks:animal-pa |
