Here's a little bit about me: My name is Jamie; I'm 24 years old. My puppy's name is Addie. She is the first yorkie I've ever owned and the second pup. She's a little over a year old. I had a teacup poodle before Addie, and it took quite a while (several years) to get over the sadness when she died.

I had just begun thinking about getting a dog from the shelter when a friend of a friend was giving Addie away at 9 months because (with a baby on the way and several children already in the house) they felt they could not give her the love and attention she deserved. So I met with her, immediately fell in love and took her home. It was difficult at first just because she came to me with so many fleas and she wasn't potty trained at all. She didn't understand what outside was and we would stand outside for more than half an hour with no success (what made it worse was the freezing temperatures. Yikes!). Finally, though, I managed to teach her what outside was for, and it's been fairly smooth sailing since! (Aside from her eating everything she can get her little paws on! She's made me an extremely clean person now!)

Of course, I love every minute with her!

By the way, I'm really excited to have found this forum. I can't wait to begin exploring it!

Welcome Jamie and Addie -- sounds like you are through the rough part! They can be tough to housetrain that is for sure. But they make up for it with all the extra love and affection they give.

Welcome. I just got one about 1 month ago that was 11 mos old. She was not potty trained, didn't know how to give kisses and didn't seem to know what a toy is. In a months time she is trained to go to the pee pads - we are still working on outside. She sleeps in a carrier and she has never messed it up and she has started playing with my other yorkie and her toys. They do come around, it just takes a little time and love. I just wish she would learn to give kisses.:animal36

Potty training is hard enough, but when we get the little darlings that old, we have to not only potty train, we have to first break their bad habits. It can make for some really difficult (and dare I say frustrating) times, but time and persistence does prevail!

Wow. You seem like you have a lot more retraining to do than I did. Luckily, my pup gives kisses out constantly (to the point where I was afraid something was wrong because she always kissed). She's well socialised and lovely. I hope that your baby starts giving tons of kisses, too!
