I am thinking of adopting a 10 yr old yorkie however i have a 15 yr old there is a 10 lb 10 year old yorkie that needs a home and i am going to see him on sat. my only concern is i have a 15 year old 5 lb female..she had her mommy and daddy until 2 years ago so she has been an only dog for a while..does anyone out there have any comments on this situation..I don't want to stress my current baby or cause her any harm. I really want to help this little guy. |
My Lady will be 14 later this year. As much as I think it is wonderful that you are considering adopting another senior, I think it will be too stressful for your old girl to have to adjust to a new dog in the house. Just let her be the only spoiled girl for as long as she has left, then I think it would be wonderful to adopt a rescue. |
How wonderful that you are considering a rescue, particularly an older gentleman. :) I would bring your current dog along to your meeting to see if they get along. I think you want to see the new dog being submissive your current one. She will feel less threatened that way, and female dogs tend to be less open to newcomers. |
I recently fostered a 10 year old little girl that I ended up keeping because no one wanted her and she was the sweetest dog. I had a 15 and 16 yr old at the time - both were just about deaf, one was blind and the other one almost blind. They took to her very well but both of my girls were sick. The 15 year old was in early kidney failure and was getting senile. She died in March from what they now say was a brain tumor. My other one is 17 now and in really bad shape. I just took her to the vet on Tues. because she is hardly eating anymore and he thinks she won't last much longer. I don't think their condition worsened due to bringing in another baby. Good luck on whatever decision you make. |
I honestly don't have any experience with this but wanted to bump this thread for those who do have to see. I think your wanting to get the older little man is wonderful though. We are in the process of adopting a 5 year old rescued little girl right now. It for us is such an exciting process. I have a 15 year old Papillion. When I brought Ralphie home 1 1/2 years ago, she didn't mind at all. In fact I think he keeps her younger. She wasn't CRAZY about him :rolleyes:, but he didn't bother her. And when I brought Agnes home about 6 months ago, she really liked her. They are really close now and they nap together. So I don't know if this helps, but it is just my personal experience that I went through. Good luck with your decision, it is so great that you are considering an older baby to love :) :) |
Imo, I know it would be a lot easier to bring in a senior dog then a puppy to a home. A puppy would be extremley unfair and stressful, however, with an older, laidback dog, that meets the temperment of your other dog already, then it may work out well. |
I had an older dog and at the time she was very sick (cancer) her time was coming fast. Well Ivy came along(sooner then planed) and I was so afraid for my other dog but she loved her. It even helped her live longer. I would let them meet and see how it goes. |
I am so sorry to hear about your baby i hope the vet was able to do something to keep her comfortable and thank you for your input on my possibility of adopting the little 10 yr old boy..his name is Lucky and i hope i can keep him lucky by giving him a good home. |
