A Yorkies Size :animal36 Is there a way to tell how big your puppy will be once it is full grown? So far all my dogs are over what the charts said they would be. It seems like there is no rhyme or reason to this some puppies stop growing no matter what they weighed at birth and some grow to be on the larger size even though they were very tiny at birth. Curious if anyone has any ideas on this? |
Some lines stop growing sooner than others. The closest "guess" I've found is doubling the 12 week weight and that's not always accurate. |
Mine are all over what the charts predicted also. Oliver was 3.5 ounces when he was born and 1 pound when we brought him home at 8 weeks. That should put him in the 3-3.5 pound range. He's 10 pounds. Abbi was 1 pound 2 ounces when I got her at 18 weeks. She should have stayed around the 2 pound area but is now (at 7 months) 3.2 pounds. I assume that she'll be about 3.5 pounds, but I wouldn't lay any bets on it. In our house, it's entirely possible that she'll reach 5 or 6. Tia was 3 pounds when I got her at 12 weeks (should mature to about 6-7 pounds) and she tops out at 19 pounds. I have no idea how much a puppy will weigh when it's an adult. Michele :-) |
One of mine (Jake) is 20lbs--more to love--He too was 3lbs at 8 weeks. It's nice to find another YT member with such a big furbaby. No one around here beleive he is a yorkie. I also have Maya who was 3lbs at 12 weeks and is 8lbs now. Her dad was 2lbs goes to show what that means lol. And then my littlest guy was about 1.8 at 12 weeks and at 8 months is almost 6lbs. Hey maybe next furbaby will be 4lbs I seem to be on a roll lol. They are additive aren't they?:) |
Neither one of mine followed the growth chart. One was 12 oz at 8 weeks and is now 6 1/2 lbs the other was a little over a lb at 8 weeks and is 11 lbs |

Responsible breeding starts with Yorkies who are near perfect representations of the breed standard and an excellent knowledge of genetics. If you get your puppy from a reputable breeder who knows her lines many generations back and carefully breeds for the standard, she will be able to give you a pretty good estimate of what your puppy will weigh full grown. The problem today is that because of their popularity, most of the Yorkie puppies for sale are bred by backyard breeders. The result is Yorkies who grow up to be adults who don't look much like what a Yorkie is supposed to. |
Laddy stayed right on chart until he hit 7 months from 6 months at 2.9 lbs he jumped to 3.2 at 7 months. So he is still staying pretty close according to the chart he should be 3.5 fully grown. When we got him they said he should be 5lbs. still hoping:rolleyes: :doghouse::dogprintsCharlene:dogprintsMama to Laddy & Lolita:dogprints:doghouse: |

Backyard Breeder vs. Reputable Breeder Breeders who fit that definition of reputable breeders can predict pretty accurately what the adult size of their puppies will be. |
Molly is 15 lbs and i still think she is little. :) |
I spend extra money for a teacup that was 1.5 lbs at 12 and 13 weeks. From the 13th week to the 20 week he jump to whooping 6.5 lbs. That is over 3/4 lb a week. He was suppose to be around 3 lbs. I did not realize you could not go by the growth chart. I am a whole lot smart than 2 months ago. I am hoping he is tapering off and have seen him suddenly eating alot less so maybe it is a big growth then he stops. Not that I am expecting him not to grow some more but hopefully not on the current growth spurt. He is very smart and his legs are short so he does not look big. Anyway it is what it is and I love him. I just had to mentally adjust that I did not get a smaller yorkie which I had my heart set on. I think when I get my next one it will be older so I know what I am getting and don't have to adjust but only enjoy. :aimeeyork |
Jackson was 6 pounds at 12 weeks old and is now about 14lbs. |
