Why can't i ever find any yorkie puppies to adopt!!!!
 

I live in atlanta and our humane society never really has any

yorkies are very popular and sought after dogs. your best bet is to find a rescue or a reputable breeder.

how do you find a rescue. Do you still look at the humane society

petfinder.com has a lot of Yorkies located in rescue groups...also check out your local craiglist. A lot of yorkies are showing up on there due to lost of jobs and what not

you might have to go outside atlanta for a better chance, look in the Chattanooga area or even knoxville, or look alittle south of atlanta. marietta, perry, you know all the places that are with a few short hours drive. I drove for 2 hours to buy my puppies and it was sooo worth it. Make a day or weekend of it.. Won't hurt to look in all the larger cities in GA, TN, FL.. if you really want a Yorkie you have to look beyond your backyard. Good Luck. also keep your options open, you said Puppy, what about a young dog, it might even be housetrained. don't expect to get male or female, just what is available and healthy..

I also recommend putting your zip code in Petfinder, which will pull up other rescues in the area. If you are looking specifically for a PUPPY, you will probably have a harder time finding one in rescue.

Do a search online for yorkie rescues. I know of 2...Yorkie Haven Rescue and Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue. But I thought you were just talking about not wanting to get a Yorkie since you have another dog that you keep outside?

Not to be a damper...but does your sister still reside at home with your parents? Here our shelters wouldn't allow her to adopt...your parents would need to complete the application...it's their home. Our "rules" are strigent and many.

That being said...ours also have a waiting list of people searching for small breed dogs. Those are contacted first when one comes into the shelter. If yours doesn't have a waiting list...I'd go as often as possible and look. The workers there will get to know you and will alert you when a possibility comes in....obviously her odds increase greatly if she is willing to consider another breed or a mix.

We looked for 5 months in shelters as far as 2 hours away before we found Teddy. He was in a shelter in a neighboring county. I checked Petfinder everyday and called them the minute I saw him. He was turned in on a Monday and I adopted him the following Wednesday. So don't give up, keep checking and then be fast when you see one you want to meet. :)

Try going to petfinder.com its lots of yorkies on that site.

Also keep in mind that a rescue is not going to be free either. There are normally some very hefty rehoming fees. Several hundred dollars is normal. Then you will also need to have funds set aside for emergency vet fees, or pet insurance (@$20/month), or a credit card dedicated to vet only expenses. You will need money for routine vet visits, shots, heartworm medication ($5/month), flea preventative ($15/month), registration/tags, quality food ($25-30/month), treats, grooming supplies, around $40 every six weeks for grooming, bed, blanket, bowls, leash/harness, toys, carrier, pee pads, etc. Becoming a guardian for a Yorkie is NOT cheap and it is a BIG responsibility! You can see that it is going to take at LEAST $100 a month to care for your Yorkie once you own it and that is NOT counting vet fees, routine or emergency. If funds are not available to properly care for one after you get it, please postpone this until you are financially solvent. I waited many years to have the dogs I wanted. But it makes the reward of finally having them all the more special.

I saw this post and just had to comment. My son is 10 years old. He's always wanted a dog, but we've lived in apartments all the while that didn't allow them. Well, we recently bought a house a couple years ago. Small house no basement was my excuse not to get the dog. Anyways, he's always loved "Yorkies!" He's done so much research from libraries and internet to actual owners. I've always told him that it's a farily expensive dog and that he should choose another kind. Pet stores were expensive and we just couldn't seem to find a breeder. (Or did I search well enough?) One day he sugested the "Humane Society". I told him it was no way that we'd find this type of dog there. He insisted and to prove a point, I took him. Well....He's not a baby, but my "Neko" was there!!! My son went nuts, so I just had to get him! He was turned in that very day by a woman whom had him from birth until now (he's 5 years old!). He's so small and cute, he looks like a baby to us..LOL! It was said that she had a baby and for expense reasons, she had to give him up. However, he's fine, healthy and so far, we've had him a month and wouldn't trade him for the world. :) In otherwords, "FAITH" lead us that day to our cutie..Keep Looking!!! Good Luck....:rolleyes:

ditto on expenses, I paid 380.00 in ver bills yesterday for a neuter and bloodwork.
we're in FL so it's more expensive here......urgg
