I was wondering if my Fifi is a Silky Terrier and not a Yorkie?? Her ears look kinda weird LOL!!!
I'm just curious :D

She definitely looks like a yorkie to me. Some yorkies just have bigger ears. If you trimmed the hair on the top third of her ears they would look smaller. I think she is adorable.

Thank you!!! She's a sweetheart :D Fifi is almost six months old and she's getting her first haircut next week saturday!!! I'm definitely gonna tell them to trim the hair on her ears :p !!! I just love yorkietalk :thumbup:

i love the big ears, i keep my yorkies hair really long on his ears and they still stand up, he look like he could fly away

She looks like a yorkie to me. I think her ears are cute they give her character. She has a very sweet face

Your Fifi is a Yorkie . I have one that have long ears , long muzzle , long legs and no tail.

Thanks everyone!!! I'm excited about her first haircut next week saturday :D
I'm hoping that they can help me with putting the bows in her hair i'm not too sure how to do it!!! Also I've been looking at pictures of other yorkies on Yorkietalk to decide how I should cut her hair :p

I love yorkietalk so glad I found it!!! Everyone is so nice, loving and Helpful :thumbup:

She is an adorable(YORKIE). Just beautiful. A lot of yorkies have big ears, doesn't mean they're not yorkies.
I used k y jelly on my dogs bangs until they get long enough to pull up, this keeps it out of their eyes. shh stop laughing, it really does work.:)

LOL I knew I heard laughing from you. I have some that I use, heck, if I didn't use it for the dogs hair, it would be just sit in there and get moldy.

Youe little one is a cute little yorkie :) When she goes and gets her hair cut , and her ears are trimmed , that is all she needs. To me, they don't look funny, especially if she hasn't had a cut before. I think it's great she can hold her ears up ! my Suzi couldn't until her ear hair was shaved.

I do have a question though:confused: About Silky vrs Yorkie's I thought a Silky did have the long muzzle? ANd is larger then the yorkie breed? Am i mistaken? How does one tell these 2 a part? Should i start a new thread? Just curious? In tis lady's picture her little Yorkie was small, though, therefore, to me still fit the profile as a yorkie, with the petite features, and color markings>:aimeeyork

Attached is a picture of a champion silky terrier. They generally are bigger than a yorkie and their head is shaped different. I have seen many yorkies that do resemble the silky and I have seen a few silkies that resemble yorkies. It just depends on how well they are bred.

The thing you have to remember, is they used to breed the yorkies much bigger, and there are still throw backs, like mine. Her parents were 4 lbs, mine ended up being 14 lbs.

From what I understand (someone correct me if I'm wrong) Yorkies are originally from the UK (yorkshire), and silkies from Australia. Back then they would send the felons/prisoners to Australia and maybe they took their dogs with them? Since yorkies used to be owned by the lower class and for hunting rats. Once they took them to Australia they bred them to be larger perhaps there are larger rats down under??? :eek:

But yes generally silkies are larger (more than 7 lbs). I did some research when we got Uni, and I looked at yorkies and silkies and they looked almost the same, except size.

Breed standard for the Silky is 8 to 10 lbs and as they were bred with the Australian Terrier they are more substantial in body girth than the Yorkie. Their snout is usually longer and their legs are shorter and a bit stockier. Stronger overall. Their hair is also very silky (LOL) with a great sheen and tends not to mat.

I made so many mistakes last time I posted about this I am just going to post the Dog show with some beautiful Silkies. hehe. YORKSHIRE TERRIER > Videos > Westminster Kennel Club I know it says Yorkshire but it really is the Silky video.

Yorkie,,,My Lolas ears looked like that when she was a puppy but she grew into them. People would make fun of her and call her YODA. Thats ok, I was a late bloomer too.

I love her ears! They are adorable. So I noticed this was a few weeks ago when it was started, did you get her first haircut and is there a pic somewhere? ;)

Thank you for sharing that picture, I've looked a tiny bit at silky terrier pic's to see if I would be able to tell the difference and never really could spot it out as well as i can with that picture. Now I feel like I can SEE the difference in the head/snout :animal-sm

As far as people telling them their yorkies are a silky, I would be willing to wager that the majority of them are meaning coat type not breed type. Then general population, even animal lovers don't really have much knowledge on different breeds of dogs. I don't think that the YT community is filled with "common" animal lovers and a very high majority of us know quite a lot if not almost all there is to know about the Yorkshire terrier breed... and probably at least every other breed that each individual has ever owned that posts on this board. I myself know quite a bit about Labs, yorkies, boston terriers... other breeds.. not so much. And no one that I know personally that has animals, and are very very good animal caretakers knows much about the dog breed that they have. They may have researched if it was the right type of dog for them but thats about as far as it goes.
