he thinks he can dig into the floor...the sofa and everything but dirt ! We live in an Apartment in Istanbul.....and Dolce isn't getting out for walks yet cause we are still getting his shots completed. We take him out for walks in his soft carrier :) And I know dogs love to dig.....but he is trying to dig into th floor.....the sofa and anything else. We spend ALOT of time playing and having fun so Im not thinking that he could be bored. Can anyone shed some light on this for me..... and while I'm here FOUR PAWS KEEP OFF spray ......can anyone tell me if this could be harmful for small dogs...cause it is pretty strong stuff and I hardly cope with it :P ok thanks |
I would try cleaning with an enzymatic cleaner, he may be smelling something and trying to get at it. The enzymes should break down any organic matter that may be attracting him. |
My 7 month old, Abbi, is a digger also. She digs like a maniac in her beds, on pillows, on our bed, on the couch. I think its a variation of the digs that circle and fluff their blankets before they lay down. She has a good "dig" and then she lays down and goes to sleep. Michele :-) |
Molly is a digger..on the bed or sofa, but mostly the bed! |

I remember reading somewhere that dogs circling is instinctual. They supposedly do it to flatten the grass or snow so they can lay down. The "fluffing" is probably the same things - trying to fluff the grass up a little for some padding. I also remember reading that dogs to dig and then lay in it because it's cooler. So - even though our doggies are spoiled rotten with beds and pillows and blankies, they are trying to get comfortable. Michele :-) |
My Cookie does this too. It drives me crazy. I always thought it was to get comfortable kind of like a cat fluffs. She mostly does it on my comforter in my bed but she will try to dig just about anything. |
Suzi does this too. However, I always thought it was cute. Right before she wants to lay down, she starts up. I can't help but chuckle > Perhaps I am just a softy. I know she is not hurting anything. She does not have sharp nails or anything. Not as if it were a cats claws. As small as A yorkie is I do not find the behavior too upsetting at all. I just think it is just one of their quirks. :aimeeyork |
Morgan mostly does this when she's trying to bury something. she'll dig and dig and dig in the couch or bed. She only does it on soft fluffy type things. She'll also sometimes do this when she's making her bed. she'll dig and high step in an area to maximize its comfy-ness. Oh yeah, and she'll do this on blankets when her face is wet and she's trying to dry it. she digs and smashes her head into the blankets. weirdo |
breezy does this too! i thought he was the only one. i firgured he was just getting comfy because my cat would do a kind a slower diging motion right before she does to sleep. but breezy does all out and is diging in my blankets right before he does to sleep. i think its so cute. he will sometimes do it for a minute, lay down, do it again for a couple seconds, lay down then be good. its so cute!!! |
How YorkieTASTİC Thanks every1 for your responses ....... ok so DOLCE isn't going 'around the bend' .... though he might be loosing his mind with being bored... But how can he fluff up the floor? Why would he do this to the floor ? Gee....... if they could only talk :) |
Keegan seems to dig when he's happy. And yeah, anything but dirt. Be careful what you wish for...Sophie is a dirt digger...she can make a rooster tail 4 feet high!!!! |

My aunt warned me about this before we got our puppy and told me to buy several baby blankets and when we notice them digging just through the blanket down in that area and let them go to town. they have 6 blankets in various areas of our home where we know they are prone to dig, including the couch. once they do it we give it to them and they dig on the blanket. this has been one of the greatest suggestions for me because now it doesn't drive me nuts when they do this behavior. |
Yep, Laya is a digger to. She loves to dig the carpet. She goes and goes like there is a treasure waiting under there. Then she gets tired and plops down on her freshly dug spot. |
