This is AMAZING to watch!
 
I know this should be in the video forum but I wanted to make sure that more people were able to take a look at how beautiful these Yorkie are~it is amazing to me. Imaging a world with no backyard breeders, puppymills and the people that did breed their Yorkie it would be to standard. :eek: Notice how they are all 5 to 7 lbs not 2 lbs like so many insist on owning and breeding. It just brought tears to my eyes to look at these gorgeous little ones! It is a long video but well worth watching

I'm going to be argumentative here... I do think classic yorkies are very beautiful. I'm glad we have them. Still, why would we want all our darlings to look the same? This is actually a negative, indicating low diversity in the gene pool, which makes the breed more vulnerable to health problems.

Second, I love see all different types of yorkies. Big ones with cottony coats, little ones with silky coats. Long tails, floppy ears, erect ears, long muzzles, short ones, "blondes" and burnettes. Isn't that part of what makes our babies special?

I understand where you are coming from, but I think that she was just trying to say they are beautiful because they are all so healthy looking. They have all obviously come from good lines, and it is nice to see such beautiful yorkies.

While I agree, it is nice to see the diversity, but it is also good to see that there is a standard. I believe that breeders should strive to better the breed, and there are a lot of them out there not doing so, and that is what causing the diversity.

They are beautiful, but remember, beauty does not necessarily indicate health. Unscrupulous showers have concealed health problems in their dogs to keep their breed prices high.

I feel like BYBs and YTCA breeders both have half of the puzzle. A good breeder considers the health of their lines, but there are also questionable practices like breeding males to their grandchildren. Presumably also a very healthy puppy would be removed from the breeding program if it had the wrong "look".

BYBers don't care about the health of their puppies, but they also keep diversity in the gene pool. Ironically, I think BYBers will help us from breeding yorkies right out of existence.

I think you are wrong on the bybr thing. Some exhibitors have concealed some health problems. Unfortunately, there are bad apples in EVERY group. But since bybers are nothing more that "mini mills" they dont even know or dont even care if a health problem exists. Boatloads of bad apples in this group! At least the YTcA, other breed parent clubs and AkC as well as alot of the exhibitor breeders do most of the health issue funding. Its NOT the bybers forking over the needed $$$$ for this needed research! And there are tons of genes in the exhibitor gene pool available so as not to cause the Yorkie breed or any other breed to go into extinction. There is absolutely no need for the byber kind of "diversity" to play a part in keeping the Yorkie or other breed alive and well.

Well, I could be wrong. It's been known to happen. :) I don't have any problem with exhibitors or breeders. My hope is that one day there will be no puppy mills, so that means we'll need breeders! My problem is that many people seem to say that looks = health, which is not true. I do think the AKC has made a major mistake in dictating standards that focus almost exclusively on looks, not health, performance, or temperment. I hope that they will correct that mistake. That doesn't negate all the good work they've done.

I understand that good breeders check for health as well, which is crucial. However, I don't dream of a day when all yorkies look almost exactly the same. I think that would (1) be boring, and (2) indicate no genetic diversity. You can't have massive conformity without a smaller pool of genes. It's simply not possible.

Also, I don't mean to say that any breeder is morally equivalent to a BYB. Obviously the intentions are completely different. I just think it's misguided to focus so much on an arbitrary looks "standard" and I hope that changes.

I see what you are saying!:) But without the "standard of the breed", how would we even have a Yorkshire Terrier, Labradore Retriever, Pug, etc? Most of the standards written by the breed parent clubs are perfectly sound and do promote good health. There are a couple that I dont agree with and maybe a few changes should be made in the interpretation of the standard. German Shepherd and English Bulldog are two good examples.
If you get alot of "diversity" you do not have a "standard" and therefore cant call it a certain breed. If a Yorkie looks like a snorki or chorkie or morkie, then how can you still call it a Yorkie? Without a "standard", you could not call it anything but a dog as you would have no "blueprint" to go by to call it a Yorkie. I think that the more "diversity" that is added, the more the Yorkie goes into extinction.

It really is something to see a group of Yorkies with the show coat! They look like they know they're something special--very regal!
