How do i stop the bites?!?!?!
 
Hey There, I am a new Yorkie owner. I know that it is normal for puppies to teeth but i was wondering if anybody know any tricks or ways to get her to chew on her toys and not on fingers and othe objects she is not supposed to chew. PLease help. Thanks for your time.:)

My new puppy is now a little over 16 weeks and we're definitely not done with the biting stage yet (as I type she's jumping trying to bite my socks), but it has gotten better.

Sweet Pea is about 19wks and is still "biting" I have tried, time out, bitter spray, yelping, saying no, clear deoderant and nothing is working. We go to puppy classes in a few weeks so i hope i can get some more ideas.

Suzi is now over a yr old and still play bites, however, now she sometimes does it and it hurts:eek: What I've done is quickly give her one of her toys, or a bully stick, I distract her from biting on me . I will not allow her to bit my hands, fingers , or feet. She growls and it is not a game . I would suggest you or to anybody who has a little bitter to start working on this behavior now, than later . I've alo seen trainers on T.V work with biting dogs b y making a high pitched sound as soon as the pup bites .This teaches the pup not to bite, and that the pup has hurt u. In the litter the pups learn by playing with each other, and when one does hurt each other they let out a squeal letting the other know it hurt. When puppy is separated too young from it's littermates it does not learn social skills , and can be more of a biter . 12 weeks is reccomended for Yorkies puppies, however many pups are sold at a younger age. Sometimes behavior issues arise , and this is one of them. But, with propper training it can be corrected.

Thank you for that information it is very interesting and i will try that. Joy is very playful and sometimes it does hurt when she bites so i will try that :)

From the off with Tia (13 wks) we used the word OW when she mouthed our fingers and she soon stopped. Even now if we are playing tug of war and she accidentally catches my fingers I say it and she comes and licks me as if to say sorry. Its so cute.

AWWWW thats adorable. i will be trying both of these ideas they sound like they could really work. I actually did try the yelping one and Joy did lick my finger and apologize for biting me so i will have to try your idea too!! THANK YOU FOR THE ADVICE!!:)

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE GREAT ADVICE!! I tried yelping when Joy bit me like i was told and she did lick my finger and apologize so i am glad that worked. I will have to try saying ow also so i hope that will make her see!! lol But thank you :D

You can also put your hand in a fist when they bite your fingers and tell them no. I saw this on dog whisper.

How old is too old for puppy classes?
 
Toby was due to start puppy socialisation classes a few weeks ago, but there still isnt enough people enrolled.

When I enquired about Millie last year at 20 weeks, the lady said she was too old, and just put her straight onto the obedience class.

The lady told me 12- 15 weeks is the best time. Toby is now 16 weeks, will be 17 weeks if they start next week.

He loves other dogs, but is really boisterous and playful, so it would be good to get him in a room with those of similar age/energy.

Do you think he is getting too old for them?

There are so many great toys out there for his teeth! I have never had an issue with my two with their teeth, but I provided lots of toys. There are puppy Kongs- which are soft enough for them to chew and helps their teeth. I also use Nylabones- they love these ones still. Try not to play with him with your hands, if starts pick up a toy and let him chew that instead. Good luck.

Hehe .... the little ones are genuinely surprised when you Yelp! or say Ow!
I love the look they get on their faces ... like what happened

But what you do after that is what will determine if they will do it again
Once you have yelled out because they bit you
You need to take away all stimulation
That means you and your chew toy fingers take a walk
and leave the puppy there

I forgot all about those days of being bitten on my toes. I can't even get Roxie to play bite. I can seriously put my finger or hand in her mouth playfully and she'll only lick me. I can't even really remember how I broke her of it. Other then touching her nose with my index finger and giving a firm "no bite" and remove myself from the situation. Good luck, pretty soon you'll be like me and can't remember it.
