got my attention, another question In my ckc, akc post something got my attention that I really didn't think about before. If you are not trying to breed or show a dog what good are papers? A dog is a dog whether they have papers or not. Right? Or, is it all about getting a healthy puppy? Papers don't always guarantee that though right? So is it imperative to get a dog with papers whether it is akc or ckc as long as you research the dog and where it is coming from? So many questions I have never had before getting Rocco. Like I have mentioned before we always just had mixed breeds and they were the best pets too so all this about papers, breeders, etc is a lot of information. |
To some people it doesnt matter at all. Others want to support their registry and feel it gives their dog some added value |
Basically what papers from the Akc are showing that the parents are both purebreds and registered with the AKC. Therefore it shows your puppy is a purebred as well. I would want papers. I believe in DNA testing thru AKC as well. Carol and Jemma |
If they are not important to you than they are not important. |

The only reason I want papers from akc is that I ran into a few breeders telling me that akc dropped them and how stupid akc was only to find out that they were breeding multiple breeds in outdoors kennel runs or cages  ... I am not a breeder and never imagine that I ever will be, but I did want a happy healthy baby so I sought akc and went to the breeders home ... but I imagine you could find a good breeder just by visiting and playing with the pups ... you can tell if they are used to being around people or are kept in a cage out back. :( |
I think its varies person to person. I look at the AKC registration as additional assurance that my puppy came from quality bloodlines. I would also hope, that by ensuring the breeders are registered that my dogs are examples of improving/maintaining the qualities of the breed. I love Yorkies because of all the qualities/standards the AKC is trying to uphold. I have nothing against mixed breeds, but I wanted pure Yorkie.... :D As you said, some breeders are still registered and are not breeding to the standard. However, I personally look for breeders who are. I know the AKC does inspect breeders. I would think breeders would take it upon themselves to live up to the AKC standard. There are always exceptions to the rule. |
