Hi Everyone

Calleigh is my first "Yorkie" and because of her Yorkshire Terriers are now my favorite breed of dog.

I have an opportunity to adopt an older dog who is around 5 and has been a breeder and right now expecting her last litter of puppies. She is a beautiful 4 lb. Yorkie and very, very healthy and a former champion.

What should I do to guarantee that she is healthy, etc????

She has a very sweet nature and loves to cuddle and be loved and I really, really want to adopt her and take her into my home.

In one sentence you say that she is a very, very healthy champion and then you ask what you should do to guarantee her health. I am not sure what you mean by these statement as they contradict themselves. If the breeder would allow you to speak to her vet and he give you a good reference that should be enough IMO. BTW~ 5 yrs old is young for a Yorkie.....good luck on you possible new addition. :)

It sounds great. Hopefully she was breeding healthy dogs as she was breeding and showing. I would ask to get her health records turned over to you or your vet. I hope you get her and can't wait to see pictures!!

Sorry, I guess my wording was a bit off. I was told by the breeder that she was healthy, etc. I was just wondering if I should also get a health check at my own vet before I make the deal.

You run a risk with any Yorkie (IMO) - So follow your heart :) Sure you can bring her to your Vet for a Health Check up ;) She will need to be spayed and probably have a teeth cleaning too :D

P.S. 5 yrs is still very, very, very young

Thanks for your replies! The breeder is going to have her spayed, health check and teeth cleaned before I get her. Guess I'm lucky - she is a beautiful Yorkie.
The breeder is a 6 hour drive from me that is why I want to ask questions, but I think I already love this wee dog.

I am not sure if the breeder would allow you to take her dog to your vet but she should be willing to let you speak to hers. If he says that she is healthy and has been well taken care of then I do not see a problem with taking her. I would also ask her to make sure that she gives you all of the vet record so that you can give them to your vet. You will need to either have her sign a medical release and pick them up OR have her give them to you with payment. I agree with TLC that she will need to be spayed and a dental can be done at the same time. :)

You must have been posting the same time as I was.....if she is that far away from you make sure to ask about the vet records ahead of time. Now that you are saying that she is going to spay and clean her teeth I wouldn't worry about her nearly as much as you have. It sounds like she is responsible and looking out for the little one's best interest. :animal36
