New Yorkie around march 6th I am new to the Forums and will be a new Grandmother to a baby boy around March 6th. My daughter and son in law will be getting a new male yorkie and we need help on a couple of questions. we are not new to yorkies we had a female for 13 years and lost her 2 years ago . We did make alot of mistakes with our last so my daughter would like to do it right this time . Holly was paper trained or so we thought .We could never take her anywhere because she would mess in the house . My daughter would like info on the PEE PADS do they work . We live where it is very cold and have alot of snow so outside training for winter seems cruel ALso should we use a crate? Holly was Gated in our kitchen but could jump the 5 foot gate and meet us at the door each night . This was not good on her little legs and knees. The breeder had the MAMA and 4 pups in a large crate . It had water food and papers in the front for the pups. Is this a good idea and should she use a crate to keep the little guy safe. Any help would be appreciated Fran |
Yes, pee pads work great, I use them as do a num ber of members. It's all about training and persistence and rewarding them when they do pee in the right spot. Wow, Holly could jump a FIVE FOOT gate? That's a serious jumper right there! Just do a search for crate training here, there's been quite a few discussions on it, it works for some people. Welcome new Grandma, did they name the Yorkie boy yet? |
Hi Fran, I too live in the big freeze........Manitoba! My Yorkies are trained to the pee pads as well as they will use disposable ones if we travel or go see friends/family or to the Nursing homes! My Abbey hates the crate....she will literally shreek & keep biting at the bars...scares me I don't want her teeth damaged! Beamer on the other hand is very low keyed and doesn't mind the crate......so long story short we do not crate! I have used a baby gate to keep them in the kitchen/dining room area but alas...Abbey has learned to climb that too! Congratulations Grandma! |
Thanks For the info . Holly was a very high jumper. We used to be met at the front door not only by Holly but by all her toys . She made several trips over the gate . It must have been very hard on her knees . We know now we should have maybe used a crate for her. The new puppy will be called Homer if you can believe it . My son -inlaw picked the name before we found the breeder. I guess we will need to try both the pads and crate and play it by ear. I hope the crate works since they will be at work during the day . That is the only part about the new puppy I will hate her leaving it alone all day . I suppose it will adjust . What about getting a large crate and putting the pads in one corner is that a mistake Fran |
