Thinking about getting a Morkie
 

I'm thinking about getting a Morkie and I am wondering a few things. First of all let me start this post by saying I am FULLY aware that Morkies are "Mutts" and not a recognized breed. I have already been bashed about how I'm contributing to puppy mills and animal cruelty etc. I know that people are charging outrageous prices for these dogs when they are not purebred. With that being said, I dont want one because I want some kind of purse dog, I want one because I love Maltese and I love Yorkies but I like how the Morkie looks as it gets older and I want something that stays small as I just want a small dog.

I just want to see a few pics of adult morkies...hear a bit about their temperment, how easy to train, if they bark alot etc. Also wondering if anyone has ever gotten one thats on the small side? If so, were there any health issues?

Also looking for general care tips...grooming...etc.

Breeding information as well...its not likely that I will breed her but just curious for future reference.

And last but not least...where to get one in Ontario? I would really like to get her from somewhere reliable and decent. I have had dogs my entire life...well every pet you can think of actually lol but its my first time buying a dog on my own and I dont want to get sucked into some sort of puppy mill situation. This is if I dont end up getting one from a shelter. that is where I will be going first.

And this means that each dog, even from the same litter might look different. A puppy might grow up to look more yorkie or more maltese. The ears may be up or down, or one of each. It might be white, brown, tan, black, ect, or even a combination. A purebred is defined as a dog with a consistent look. The reason why morkie are not a purebred is because they can get too many variations. A morkie may have a more yorkie personality, or a more maltese personality. There is no piece of paper with a written standard saying how a morkie should act or how one should look.

Also wondering if anyone has ever gotten one that’s on the small side? If so, were there any health issues?
[I]Every dog will have health issues at sometime, but if you buy your dog from a reputable show breeder than they will be less likely to occur. Reputable breeders strive to produce health dogs. This is why breeders breed and show their dogs. A good breeder would do health test on their dogs before they breed them and on all of the puppies. This is why they charge their high prices. I can go on more about reputable breeders, but you want to buy a mix, and no reputable/decent breeder sells mixes for money. That's just ridiculous when you can get one basically free at the shelter. The reason people should be breeding is to better the breed. Better the health, temperament, look, ect. A morkie is not a breed, so why is the person breeding them? Because they're "cute", is not a legit reason. 99.9% of dogs are "cute". Maybe they’re breeding for the money?
But did you know yorkies are 36 times more likely to get a liver shunts than any other breed? Maltese get tear staining. A morkie may get tear staining, may not, because it is a mix there's no sure way of knowing. You won't be able to tell until the puppy starts cutting it's adult teeth, at about 6 months old. </I>

Also looking for general care tips...grooming...etc. <I>Once again, mixed breeds are different. There's no way of knowing this until your puppy grows. All puppies blow their puppy coat at age 6-12 months old so you won't exactly know what type of coat your morkie will have.</I>

Why would you spend all that money on a mixed breed when there are tons of them in shelter, big ones, and small ones, but most of them need a warm home and a loving owner.
A friend of mine has a yorkie mix that we think is mixed with a maltese. She is 2.5 pounds and was rescued from a puppymill.

I don't know much about morkies, other than that they are cute. :) Some YT members have morkies, so hopefully they will be along to help you.

I think it's great you will be looking at a rescue first. Personally, I do not have a problem with "hobby" breeders, which I imagine is where you will find a morkie if you don't go to a shelter. I know this is a very controversial topic, but I think there are a variety of small-time breeders, good and bad, while there is no such thing as a good puppy mill. I would do all the standard things you do when looking for a pure bred dog; make sure you meet the breeder in her home, meet the parents, etc etc.

Oh, also wanted to say that from what I've seen, morkies are usually a lot cheaper than full yorkies. I know of people who went with morkies because they could not afford a full yorkie.

I have seen morkie's that are cheaper than shelter dogs and rescued adult yorkies. Getting a mixed breed dog does not mean getting a healthy dog, but getting a purebred dog does not mean a healthy dog either. Research is so important, seeing puppies in person will just make you want one more.

From what I've learned some puppies are irresistible.

My little Trevor is a Morkie.....He's cute, he's smart, he's small......my biggest issue is grooming. My Yorkie stays nice with brushing daily between grooming sessions......Trevor needs A LOT of brushing (which he hates)...he mats easily......:aimeeyork:animal36

Maltese coats are very different than yorkies coats. It is much thicker and therefore matts easier than yorkie coats. This does not mean the OP's morkie's coat will be like yours. Her's may have a more yorkie coat when the adult coat comes in, then again, maybe not.

Instead of buying one from a breeder get a one from a rescue. If you rescue one your money will not be going to a puppymill so you wouldnt technically be supporting one. I know there are a few morkies in my area that I saw on petfinder.com You should take a look!

If I WAS going to get a mix with a yorkie the only one I would want is yorkie-maltese. With that being said I WOULD NOT go and support mix breeding ONLY because of the crazy prices!! I would go around looking at shelters and rescues. Your in Ontario, where abouts? I am in Windsor. I know alot of people sell them on kijiji.com but if you like either breed I know for just a LITTLE bit more you can get either breed. I have seen yorkies for around 700$ and maltese for around the same if not less. I have seen morkies for 600$!!! I was tricked back a few years ago and I went ahead and bought a yorkipoo. Now I was searching for a dog and I really wanted one to bring home that day, yes I know I am crazy. lol Well the yorkipoos and yorki shihtzu were ready that day and I took a yorki poo pup, that looked alot like a yorkie with floppy ears and a tail. It had the personality of a poodle and barked alot, was crazy hyper and would not train for nothing. I paid $550. When I was reading about the breed I read about BOTH breeds and got an idea of what I was getting into. I definitely don't ever want to buy a mix on purpose again, these people who breed and brag about the mixes are people who ONLY WANT TO MAKE MONEY!

I love my morkie. She is almost 7 month old and has changed so much since I got her. People always tell me that she looks like a yorkie but they love her mix of colors. Here are some pictures.

My neighbors have a Morkie and he is precious. He is energetic and very cute. He looks like about 7 or 8 pounds and looks like a light colored yorkie. I have a yorkie and a shih poo. I got my shih poo because my best friend had one with such a great personality, I went to the same breeder and got him. In hindsight, I should've gotten another yorkie. I love my shih poo but he has anxiety/social issue's.
As for breeding, from everything I have learned from yorkietalk and beyond, I am against breeding. I never understood how you can breed a Morkie and still call it a Morkie. In my mind, a morkie can only be obtained through breeding a yorkie and a maltese, I think the good traits would be lost when breeding morkies with morkies. But again, my neighbors Morkie is SO precious.

My morkie is from a maltese and a yorkie. I agree that I don't think there is any other right way to do it.

My Mitzy is a morkie, but looks like a maltese. She is almost 8lbs. Very much a terrier personality though lol. Shes energetic, loves to play, healthy except for flea allergies.

I got her from a yorkie and maltese breeder and paid less than $200 for her. She was 16 weeks when I got her. I agree that you should look in shelters first, alot of times you can even find puppies. And please don't breed her. Im not saying it becuase it is mixed but because of the pet overpopulation.

Good Morning!!!
Just wanted to tell you that I have a Morkie, who I have had for 4 years now. She is my queen!!! She weighs between 7 and 8 lbs, is the most beautiful dog you've ever seen, a beautiful silver silky coat. She is smart as a whip, and has tons of personality!!!

I got my daughter, who was 8 then, a morkie instead of a Yorkie like I have always had and still have. She is full grown and 1 lbs smaller than my baby. she weighs a little over 3 lbs. She has been an absolute joy! The best part of the Yorkie is there and the most obsessive/compulsive parts of the Yorkie are not. Which is WONDERFUL! She is smart, calm, and quite a character. We are learning their coat. Depending on the qualities she/he picks up the coat is sooooo different. Maci is so so soft and thick thick. My yorkies is thick but not soft like feathers. the maltese hair must be extremely different. It is almost full length now and I am considering braiding or wrapping. she is just now getting some mats, but unfortunately unlike our Yorkies, you don't see their mats until they are the size of a small tomatoe. I don't have any pictures of them on hand but I know of 3 yorkie/maltease mixes and the all look like totally different dogs. One has floppy ears and is apricot colored curly hair all over, one is blond almost white all over with perky ears that stand up, and the last one has a tan face with perky ears and markings like a yorkie still a baby but the black is turning silver on her back so hard to say what color she will turn out.

My Morkie, Mia is absolutely a delight and beautiful. She has such a wonderful personality. I also have a registered Yorkie and she is 6 and the boss. She is also very beautiful and they truly love one another. As for buying a morkie.....I think it is a wonderful mix of breeds. Do what you want. I bought mine from a breeder in Missouri and had her flown to Montana. She is the most well adjusted, energetic people lover I have seen in a dog. Check your breeder out online. They have quite a bit of information. Inspections....how many dogs on site etc. The breeder and I have stayed friends and email back and forth. She is always wanting more pictures of Mia and how she has adjusted in her new home. That is what you want to look for. Grooming Mia is totally different than Chloe. Mia has more of the matting from the maltese side. Try to keep her combed out, but she does hate it. Get a detangler spray and use Mane and Tail shampoo and creme rinse. Also need to keep an eye on the ears. Hers flop and it is important to keep the hair trimmed or pulled. Never had an issue with Chloe as hers stand up. Hope this helps.
