Size of my yorkie ?? Is this a problem ?? I have a 7 month old yorkie and she hasnt gained any weight since her visit at the vets at 4 months old. She weighs just 2lbs 8ozs and she was that weight when she was 4 months old. This is my first Yorkie and Im starting to worry about her weight,can anyone out there let me know if this is a problem. All Yorkies are considered a toy breed. Although 4-7 lbs. is more of an average size, there are many less than 3 pounds. Your little one may stay just that little. But she may also surprise you with another growth spurt before she reaches a year old. She can still be very healthy at 2 1/2 pounds. There are other tinies here and I hope their owners chime in to reassure you. You will just need to continue to be as careful as if she is a puppy for life. Tiny bones are fragile, tiny throats can choke easily, etc.... But they are also a delight to watch. I would love to have a tiny as it is that petite little regalness that first attracted me to the breed. But there are more dangers to consider. First off I would be sure that she is spayed. Don't want to risk a pregnancy with that tiny of a Yorkie. I would also make sure you have steps or ramps to help her if she is allowed on beds or furniture. Be sure you have a vet that is experienced with tiny dogs as they do have their own set of requirements when it comes to allowing for shots, checking joints, and anesthesia. Would love to see pictures of her too. |
as long as the vet says she is healthy, i think she is okay - just smaller than usual! bree goes through weird growth spurts too. she is 8.5months old and is 2 lbs, 5 oz and has been this weight for at least 6 weeks. she was stuck for the longest time at 1 lb, 9 oz, finally creeped up to 2 lbs and now is "stuck" again. my vet says she is very healthy and that she is probably done growing being tiny in itself does not necessarily mean health issues. but it does mean you have to be that much more careful and protective of them :) |
Gracie Ruth pretty much stopped growing around 9-10 months of age. She is 8" tall and weighs 3 1/2 lbs. I was really hoping she'd be closer to 5 lbs but she is happy and healthy so that's all that's important. She is fearless too, and I do have to watch her a little bit more to be sure she doesn't get in over her head. But otherwise she gets treated the same as our other two, who are bigger then her. We have a step stool for her and Yogi to use to get up and down from the couch. And I've taught my DH to do the Yorkie Shuffle so they rarely get punted across the room. She wore a bell when she was a pup to help him hear where she was, but now (15 months old) she does a pretty good job of staying out from under feet. |
My two girls are very tiny also. Cutie is 4 yrs old and she only weighs around 3 pounds (btw...she's the one who thinks she's a Rottweiler). She is very healthy, strong and energetic. The vet says she is very healthy, just tiny. I want to have her fixed just in case but I am concerned about anesthesia in one so tiny. My Hannah is 7 yrs old and she only weighs in at almost 5 lbs. she is too is very healthy and happy. :dogwalk: |
