Hi everyone ...

Well this is my first post. I'm not a yorkie owner yet but I'm hoping to get one by the end of next year. Until then, I wanted to learn everything I can first so that when I do get my Yorkie, I'll be a better owner. Does anyone have any advice? Can you direct me to some reading material (online, books, etc.)?

I think my biggest concern for when I am ready get one is where to go about getting one (for a decent price) ... I'm from Southern California by the way.

In the meantime, if anyone has any pictures they want to post of their Yorkies, I would love to see them!

Welcome to YT, Jenn. You're going to love it here. And you're going to love owning a Yorkie. There's a ton of good information right here on YT. Start with the FAQs on the General Discussion forum. The My Yorkie forum has a lot of pictures.

There is also a health & diet forum and a training forum. You could spend weeks just looking at old discussions.

Hope you enjoy it.

Hi and welcome to YT! I am in San Diego but I know a lot of the breeders in te So Cal area so I may be able to help you get to know some of them and find out when they have litters coming up.

I have three yorkies whho live with me and my daughter who lives in Santa Barbara has one too.

The last pic is of my baby boy Hefner who turns one yr old this Sat.
The third is my middle daughter's little girl Princess Chai who is a parti color gold and white yorkie and is 9 months old
The second is my new baby Ava who is 4 months old.
The first is my oldest daughter's boy named Buddha and he turns a yr on 10/1.

I have heard prices in California are usually a bit more than in other places around the country, if you have not yet considered it, you may be able to find a more affordable price if you are willing to have your breeder ship your Yorkie. Good luck and have fun finding the perfect Yorkie for your home. :)

You might also like to get the book "The new Complete Yorkshire Terrier" written by Joan B Gordon, who was a breeder of the finest Yorkshire Terriers and raised many champions. It was recommended by someone on this board, and I got my copy from amazon.com. I don't remember how much it was, but it was very reasonable. There is a lot of information in it, about a lot of things.

Oh, and welcome to YT, by the way. I'm sure you will have a good time here.

Hi and welcome to yorkietalk! I am in the same boat as you. I grew up with dogs, but I don't have a puppy of my own yet. You have probably found the best place for info on the net. The people here are great and they can answer just about any question you may have. Good luck on getting your puppy.

Yes I would definitely like to hear about new litters if you ever find anything out. Thanks! Do you have any idea what the going rate is nowadays in CA? I've only seen ads for Yorkies on Next Day Pets and it is such a big range. I also saw a Yorkie at a shop (Moondoggies) in Orange County and I think she was $2300.

Wow you have such cute Yorkies ... and Ava looks SO adorable!!

By the way -- Happy Birthday to Hefner!

Thanks for letting me know about the shipping alternative. I'll keep it in my mind for when I finally get my Yorkie!

Prices do tend to be a bit higher in California with the bottom line being about $1200 for a decent yorkie and the average being about $2200 or so. If you are looking to get one from out of the state it is certainly possible but it really all depends on what you are looking for. I bought one of mine from Texas and had a great experience.

Smaller, cuter females are more wherever you look. There is a great little breeder in Covina that has adorable pups and they are around $2200.

Do you know what you want yet? When I was searching for Ava I told breeders I was looking for a healthy tiny female with small, well set ears, big eyes, short snout, a compact body, great full coat and a spunky personality!!! I was lucky and got it all because I was patient and didn't make an impulse buy with the first puppy I saw. If you PM me I can put you in touch with her breeder as she has friends who also breed for that "look" if that is what you like.

Thanks for replying again. I probably won't be buying one very soon, but I will be sure to PM you if I need to contact a breeder. All I know right now is that I want a brown & gold male. I uploaded a picture of Yorkie I like for my avatar. I like his color (I like slightly lighter, more golden Yorkies as well) and the shape of his face/ears/everything. I think he was $1500 from San Francisco, but he wasn't from a breeder ... his parents just had a litter. Anyhow, I also like them with short hair ... so I assume I will have to get my Yorkie trimmed pretty often?

We keep a puppy cut on Yoda (shaved back and chest) during the summer. For the face, we leave it normal length and we probably trim that every three weeks or so. For the puppy cut, a shave down will last about 5 to 6 weeks for us. We've been doing it ourselves lately, the haircuts and shaving. :)

My Yorkies stoped growing around a year of age, but still gained some weight after that age.
