How much money do you have saved for Emergencies? I was just curious how much money people set aside per dog for emergencies? Many people say about $1000 is good, but many times I have seen the bills are usually higher. Around $1500 to $2000 seems to be the average. We are bring our puppies home soon and we are going to be setting aside some money. Most of our emergency fund was depleted with Suri so we want to make sure we have enough just encase because we might be bring home 2.:p |
My guess is most people don' t have any money set aside, but I think it's an excellent idea. Dogs aren't like a car, where it's more cost efficient to buy a new one than put money into the old, so very often you have to pay double the cost of a new puppy to fix the old dog. It may not make financial sense, but it makes, ethical sense. I think most of us would be very surprised at how many dogs are put to sleep, just because people could not afford the cost of a $1500.00 surgery. I think $1000.00 should be the minimum amount put aside for emergencies. |
We have an emergency fund that is in the teens but it is for everything and anything. Our dogs don't have a special fund, because they are part of the family the money would come out of our regular emergency funds.... I just read that back... hope it makes sense |
I write a cheque generally... and this winter spent over 2 grand on a litter of puppies, had 4 and lost two... I am sure many people do not but it is really a good idea. |
I don't have any saved for a doggie emergency. I think it's a great idea though. I was just thankful that my wonderful Mom was able to lend me the 3,500 that I needed for Missy's emergency leg surgery. |
I don't have an emergency fund, but I do have an Insurance policy for him that covers emergencies, vet bills, etc (if I choose to pay the ded. and use it for that). However, I DO like the idea of an emergency fund and am going to start doing that for my Bailey!!! I think that's a fabulous idea!!!! |
I have pet insurance for Conner, but have money set aside for him because I have to pay up front. There is nothing I would not do for him. |
After reading about the high cost of some vet bills here, I decided it made since for me to get pet insurance. I used petplan. I think for around less than 260 per year, I get up to 20,000 vet bills paid per year *after $200 ded* Money to help find my pet if she goes missing, etc. So if I have one bill of $2500, that would equal 10 years of payments. |
I just would never want to be put into a position where I would have to think twice. There was a girl on CL that was asking for donations for a pup and she didn't have one penny saved up and the poor pup got Parvo. So very sad, in her case she got help and the pup is doing well but she doesn't have the money to pay the bill. I think I am just going to keep saving and have a larger account for any emergencies. Insurance is an idea, we saw it and my BF thinks we should do that too. |
I'm just starting to save money up. I do have insurance though, but I'm saving because I have to pay upfront. God forbid anything happens to her. I try to put 1/4 of my paycheck every two weeks into a savings, just for Mahina. It's working out well. I think everyone should save up some money, even if they have insurance. |
I have pet insurance and an emergency account. :D i like to be prepared. |
We always keep enough $$ in our savings/checking to deal with any emergency - pet or otherwise. Recently, we *finally* did our wills and all of that - and we set up a Pet Trust if something happens to both of us - so no one will ever have to think twice about getting them vet care if we are gone. I think it's a great idea to set money aside for pets - like their own little insurance plan if you don't have pet insurance. :) |
I was considering getting pet insurance just b/c yorkies are so small and I'd hate to have something happen and not be able to afford the vet bill. My boss' dog had cancer and luckily she had the money to pay for the surgery to remove it, now she has pet insurance for him. I think it's a great idea. |
We have pet insurance for all 3 of our girls..and also we have our savings which is also for our girls..and also an emergency credit card with pretty high limit for Our girls and anything emergency. |
I have insurance on all 3 of mine that gives me peace of mind. I have gotten way more than I put in on Cali. I also have a pretty good savings account for emergencies. I also put in my will that a certain amount of money goes to the person/persons taking any dog I have at that time. I also have instructed my dtr that if she or a family member can't keep them to contact someone on Yt to find the best homes for them. Volunteering at a shelter I have seen too many old and young dogs come in when their owner dies or can't afford their care and it breaks my heart to see their sad eyes. |
