Unwarranted Attack - Why? Yesterday I took Adie and Skeeter for a brisk walk. We only did about 3/4 of a mile but they were both huffing by the time we got back home. As I was taking Adie's harness off Cassie (the sweetest little shih tzu in the world) came over to give Adie a sniff and Adie went off on her. I grabbed Adie hard and evidently hurt her because she went off on Cassie again thinking that She had retaliated. Cassie and I were both stunned. Adie has NEVER attacked Cassie. Cassie is the boss around here and has put both yorkies in their places many times in the past. After that Adie kept going up to Cassie and trying to get a face wash but Cassie would just turn her head away. Adie got the cold shoulder all night long which just about killed her. It looks like things are back to normal today with Cassie washing Adie and Skeeter's faces - holding Skeeter down so he won't wiggle and shoving everyone out of her way so she can have her favorite spot on Daddy's lap. But I can't figure out why Adie went off like that for no good reason. Any thoughts? |
I didn't quite understand the harness thing. You were taking "Adie's" harness off of "Cassie" and Adie attacked Cassie? Was possession the root of this? Did the harness have played a role? Could Cassie have given Adie the wrong signal? We don't always catch who starts the riff. Keep your eyes on Adie to see is she's trying to assert a higher role in the pack. |
Adie may have simply felt restrained and in her mind in defense mode. Or you may never know...sometimes it happens and we never figure it out. |

Sounds to me like a possession thing was going on You were taking off your Yorkie's Harness off the other dog while she was present This more than likely elicited a possession response and what made it worse was that You were giving attention to the other dog at the time |
are they fixed, could one be going into heat. Females start acting crazy when others around go in heat. I always have to remove the one in heat from the others, because they start wanting to pick fights. They never do it when no one is in heat, just one big happy family. If they are not fixed you may want to keep a close eye on them. Dogs and tell before we can when one is coming in heat. They always tell on each other. Good luck. |
I'm sorry for the confusion. I was taking the harness off of Adie - the yorkie. Cassie - the shih tzu came up to her to give her a greeting sniff. Adie was in an awkward body position but shouldn't have felt threatened by it where Cassie is concerned. Both are altered. Cassie is 10 years old and Adie will be three next month. Neither one of them has ever experienced a heat. I suppose Adie could be positioning herself for alpha. she is definitely the beta in the household and can be pretty testy with Skeeter who is just one year old. |
