Long time lurker, first time poster Good Evening, I just wanted to introduce myself....my name is Amy. I am picking up my little girl tomorrow, I have to drive out of state to get her. We are still considering names...so far we are tossing around Phoebe, Kahula (our lab is named Cognac), Willow and Allegra...any feedback? she is a five month old rescue. This is my first yorkie and first small dog ever. I have a yellow lab and I am curious to hear from other who have bigger dogs how that is working out and how introductions went. I am a little nervous about that. So far you all have been a great resource in answering my many questions! Thank you so much! |
I was reading up on names and I thought I read that two syllable names work best for dogs. Although I do love Kahula:D, I like unique names. No advice on the big dog introduction. I am worried about that myself, since I have always wanted a lab or retriever. I could just get 5 more yorkies and then it would almost be like getting one other big dog. ;) BTW :wavey:Welcome to YorkieTalk:wavey: |
Welcome to YT . |
:welcome4: to Yorkie Talk. Congratulations on rescuing a Yorkie. We need more people like you. I love the name Phoebe. I do not own any big dogs, so I cannot give any advice. I am sure another member of Yorkie Talk can help you. I cannot wait to see the cute Yorkie pictures when you adopt your new puppy. |
Hi! :wavey: :welcome4: :yorkiesar Please post pictures when you can. :) |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk and the wonderful world of Yorkie onwership (I think mine owns me). As you mentioned Yorkie Talk is a wonderful resource for us new Yorkie owners. I like the names Willow and Phoebe (I may use Phoebe for my next Yorkie). See they are addicting I am already talking about number 2!!! Please post a picture when you get her. |
Welcome to YT! :) Awesome of you to save a rescue! |
Welcome to YT and congrats on getting your new baby girl!! ......of course I am partial to the name "Willow" ;) |
Congratulations. We had Wallace our 90 pound black lab for about a year and a half (rescued from the pound) before wee Ted came to live with us. At first I was nervous because of the size difference. Ted didn't seem to realize he was just a wee fragile man, but somehow Wallace Knew. Though they appear to be playing rough, it amazes me that Wallace senses Ted's fragility and seems to know just how far to go when they're playing. On the other hand, Ted has no respect for Wallace and will nip at his ears and annoy him endlessly and Wallace just takes it patiently. When he's had enough, he has a low growl he uses and Ted will either roll over on his back as to give in or slink away. They have become great pals. Every now and then Ted will have a reverse sneezing episode and Wallace immediately jumps to attention and checks him out to make sure he's okay. There are times when I make them stop roughhousing because I get nervous. When we leave the house, we separate them just in case they got bored started playing and Ted were to accidently get hurt because with the weight difference accidents could happen. You're in for some funny sessions. The only con I have noticed is that Wallace seems to get extra excited when we return home after being gone as if he feels he has to fight extra hard for that initial attention that he didn't before. Wallace was never allowed on the couch before but since Ted came along he is now included on the couch and the bed just like Ted is. It's so easy to spoil the little one so make a conscious effort to treat them equally on your part, and they'll work out the rest in "doggie language." Have fun. |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby.. |
Welcome !!! My 2 cents' worth Congrats on your new pet !!! I would just make sure to watch them closely & NEVER leave them alone together. Most big dogs I've known have been laid back (As if, "Yep, I'm a big dog, I've got nothing to prove"), but it's the little ones that have the attitude/are fearless. I used to have a greyhound, and she was as gentle & protective as could be with my wife's Yorkie, my mother's Chihuahua, other small dogs, cats, etc. Evidently, with the size difference it was apparent who was "alpha dog" (that & the big, lowdown I've-had-enough-of-your-nonsense-growl :D), as previously mentioned. Good luck with your new pet !!! |
welcome and congratulations! :D |
....I forgot As for the naming part, you can Google "puppy names" or somesuch, and find lists and lists of boys and girls names, it's fun to look through them and see the different ones. Or, you could just wait for a while, see what type of personality you have on your hands & go from there !!!!! |
Like the names. We had two Terrier brothers we named them . Kahlua and Sambuka. We called then Louie and bookie.:animal36 |
Hi...Welcome to YT. I have a 7 month old Yorkie (Harley) that I got at 3 months of age and also have a 7 year old Boxer (Angel). I was very worried about the size difference and the fact that Angel had not been around many dogs. Luckily Angel is an outdoor dog and he is in an electric fence. At first I would not let Harley down until we were out of his reach. I slowly introduced them with me holding Harley in my arms. It took about 2 months before I could trust Angel enough to let Harley walk in his territory. They get along great now. Harley actually thinks he's the big dog. Hopefully you'll have the same luck. |
OK, I'm a goober From original post: Good Evening, I just wanted to introduce myself....my name is Amy. I am picking up my little girl tomorrow, I have to drive out of state to get her. So far you all have been a great resource in answering my many questions! Thank you so much! Just a couple more thoughts RE: names 1) Has anyone on here (besides me, that is ) ever heard that you shouldn't name your pup anything that rhymes with "NO !" ?!? e.g., they might confuse their name with your response to an undesireable behavior ? OR....... 2) Not to name them similar-sounding names, as it might confuse them ? My wife & I went through this. We named our 1st pup, Gracie, right away, no problem (she liked that name). Six weeks later, we started off calling our 2nd pup "Josie", but we perceived it might be confusing to them because they sounded kinda similar with the "ie" endings. So within a few weeks, her name was changed to "Coco" (which, by the way, my wife obviously over-ruled me on question # 2, above). I've heard the simpler the name, the better, and that makes sense (as previously posted). Pardon me for geeking out !!!! |
Welcome to addicting world of YT! All those names are so pretty. I like kahula or how about kahlua lol |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new little one! :animal-pa:aimeeyork:animal-pa |
1 Attachment(s) Thank you, everyone for your kind words advice. We just made it home from California where we went to pick her up. It was a lot of driving for one weekend but she behaved perfectly. We decided on Phoebe for a name. The vet says she is about 4 1/2-5 months and sadly, I am her fourth home.I am not sure why anyone would give her up, she has a great disposition, is well behaved, happy and affectionate. She does seem to have some abandonment issues as she cries when I am out of sight and I suspect potty training may be a challenge so tonight as hard as it is, she is sleeping in a crate. We started intros with the big dog and it went better than I expected but we have a long way to go. They get along, it is just that he wants to play with he and he dosen't realize how rough he is and she gets afraid. When we yell at him for it, she thinks we are yelling at her and we scare her, she is very sensitive. I am looking forward to taking her to be groomed, but since she was just spayed a week ago, I have to wait another week. Her new coat is coming in, it looks like she is going to be lighter in color, there is a lot of blue and gold coming through. |
Hi I'm new too....I have large dogs...and they get along great with my baby...!!! Good luck with your new yorkie...and congrats! |
That is encouraging! It is a bit stressful right now, I am so afraid he is going to hurt her. |
