How does your yorkie behave with babies/children? How does your yorkie behave with babies/children? Do they get jealous of your new baby? How do they act when kids come over? Just polling here.... |
Cassi is really good around kids, toddlers and babies. Not too sure about Ori as he hasn't been around with any children. |
Chachi is a bigger yorkie and loves all kids. My Jewels is nervous around them |
Maximus likes kids, but he wants to play with them. Currently, he doesn't get to run free around the house. He has an x pen in the kitchen (he sleeps in a crate at night). We get him out to play with him several times during the day. He goes CRAZY over my 5 yr old. Not sure if it is her long hair, or high pitched voice. And of course, if the kids are running past him, he jumps up and barks. I trust him around kids, but, they have to be careful around him when they get him "started", or his teeth will snag them in excitement. |
Mine are great with kids. They love them. But you have to watch them closely... sometimes kids will pick them up. If they drop them, or squeeze a little too hard, they can injure them. (Especially the tiny yorkies.) The kids would not hurt them on purpose. But Yorkies are really fast and accidents can happen. So the rule with mine is that they are not to be picked up. If they want to hold them, the kids sit down on the floor and let the puppies crawl into their laps. TJ and Sandy are not little.. they are 6 and 7 lbs. And if they come to me or go into their pen, ... they are to be left alone. I have 13 official grandkids and almost that many unofficial ones. And they all love my babies. |
I got Jamie right before my cousin's wife had their little girl. She and Jamie just love each other. She could stick her fingers right in his mouth and he would never bite her. However, I did work right from the very start to teach them both that they had to be gentle with each other. When my roommate got her yorkie, Beau he didn't know any better and when she stuck her fingers by his mouth for him to lick her he caught her with his puppy teeth. So she decided he was "Bad Beau" and she would love on Jamie and "oooh and ahhh" extra to show Beau what he was missing. Needless to say now that I've taught her not to stick her fingers in his mouth and worked with him to not be mouthy with her they're getting along much better. Jamie will sometimes get jealous if I'm holding a baby or another puppy, but he just pouts or if I'm sitting he'll climb up on my shoulder and lay his neck in front of my face for kisses. |
My Annie B was amazing with babies. She was so totally fascinated by them that she would completely ignore everything else, even food. I don't know if it was her maternal side, she was a breeder at a puppy mill for the first 5 yrs of her life. :( Or the baby smell, or what. But she loved whenever a baby came to visit us. She'd just sit and stare at them and gently touch them with her nose. |
mines gorda and ricko they do great with kids and babies but osito since he is our first yorkie and we don't have kids yet he get jealous:confused: when he see a baby.. |

Buddy loves kids as long as they don't try and pick him up. I watch him carefully with my 2 1/2 yr old granddaughter Isabella because she want's to love him all the time and hug him. He get's annoyed at times and dosen't want to be bothered but enjoys being around her. Loves her sister, Nicole the best. Nicole is his favorite love in the whole wide world. Encluding me! I think he just loves being with the kids but dosen't want them hugging or picking him up. He's not sure of them in that aspect. |
breezy is good with kids if they dont mind the jumping lol. he loves them. |
Jackson loves kids! He especially loves the kids he knows and is familiar with. The new kids tend to make him a little shy and nervous... because they come at him so fast, ya know? It's like "oh dog!" and three kids come rushing towards him, so of course he gets nervous. His first-time meetings with kids he doesn't know, he sort of backs up slowly when they first approach him but after a little bit longer, he allows them to pet him and just loves it. He's a bigger Yorkie, at 13 pounds! But, my little brother and sister for example (both really young! big age differences between us) he ADORES! |
This is all good news. I just wanted to check. I have often heard that dogs in general will get upset and jealous when you have a baby and all of the sudden they get more attention than the dog. Bella has only been around my cousin's little girl, but Alana was scared of Bella so I didn't exactly get the chance to see how that would have gone. She didn't seem bothered by her though. I will admit, my little Bella is a mama's girl! She has to be around me or in my lap at all times! |

get jealous, but they also can get a mothering, nurturing side as well. If you are pregnant (I have no idea if you are lol) the best things to do are to have someone bring home a blanket or socks of the babies from the hospital and let Bella sniff it before the baby comes home. You want your baby to be considered another member of your "pack" and the baby should be considered a leader to Bella as well. I know that when my mom was pregnant with my sister, their dog got jealous but not in a mean way. She just constantly wanted kisses, etc whenever the baby was being held. She was very motherly to the baby also, took care of her, etc. |
I am going to start a new thread With descriptions of Paddy(deceased ) and Alfie Both dogs were rescues I willl detail the problems with rescues and the love I have had back It will be a long story, but you may pick between the lines and see how these grand little chaps held their own in our world look out for my thread |

Well...I am not exactly sure yet. Just polling so I am prepared!!! Thanks for your input! |
Isla is very nice and quiet, but if she had a choice she'd run away and not let the kids touch her if at all possible. |
Zoë LOVES kids. I think it's because almost all children we come across want to say hello to her. (Unlike the many adults that show no interest in saying hello, which greatly upsets Zoe! :p ) Anyway, I tried from an early age to get her around kids so that she would get used to them and eventually do well with them. (Since within her lifetime she will have human brothers/sisters...) Anyway, her interactions are usually limited to neighbor's kids or children at parks we go to. At 6 months old she amazed me and put up with my boyfriend's 1 year old baby cousins over Thanksgiving. The twins loved her but weren't too gentle (nothing too bad but they would push and prod a bit as little ones can). She just sad there, kind of smiled, and let them pay her attention in whatever way they wanted to. After that I knew she'd be fine. But when I have a baby.... I'm afraid she may get jealous but I think planning ahead like others have suggested would be really helpful! |
Bella adores children of all ages!!! :) Her breeder had children that she slept with when she was younger and the spoiled her and loved her to pieces. Around babies she tends to be quiet and just look at them and try to snuggle with them. |
Roman is really apprehensive around kids of all ages. He hasnt been around kids a whole lot so thats probably why. He barks at kids on bikes and skateboards or if they run. He's really nervous when they try to pet him, but he lets them do it. He has never snapped/bitten or even growled in a mean way at them. I dont think he understands what babies are. He acts so funny around them. If they cry he barks like whats that noise mama? Other than that he just sniffs them and watches them when they making their cooing noises. |
Suzi loves children . They are her favorite. However, She is a hyperactive little yorkie, and to a very young child i have to watch Suzi . I have not had a baby or toddler inside my home with Suzi. Only outside. I've seen her jump all over small children, and I will not let her do this, because she can really JUMP. ... To an older child, they can handle it, but, a little one, NO. SUzi is just too excited. My older nieces and nephews it is always pure joy when they come over, she can't help it. I am ignored. Forgotten... Litterally. Most babies Suzi has seen has been in the arms of moms or in strollers. She is curious and has sniffed at them.. Not behaved nutty, however, I always use great caution, because there is a baby involved. Whn my son was an infant/newbron I had a cat . The cat was confused a little when I brought him home .However, the cat whould lay right next to him and was bigger then the baby.... The cat never hurt him, never laid on him, and I always was there! The cat never scratched him either.... And was very mellow. my yorkie is a hyperactive little girl , and I love her dearly ,the same applies to her though, as with any animal, and very young children/infants/babies. Supervision , has to be the responsibility of the parents at all times. and #1priority ! |

We don't have children @ home, but when a friend visits w/her baby girl, Mimi & Momo follow her around everywhere! I don't know what it is, but they want to sniff her & go where ever she goes. They totally ignore me... Momo will even get his favorite squeeky ball & drop it by her feet! He won't even let me touch it... LOL! Maybe it's the innocence they smell...:p |
Meg is great with toddlers and children. We were with a crying baby yesterday and she didnt' seem to mind... I do wonder what will happen when (someday down teh road) I have a crying baby of my own in my arms. I think Meg will be pretty jealous. |
Stormy loves the attention from the children. She is especially great with my daughter, it is so cute to watch, Stormy gets just as excited to see her as me each morning and everytime we get home. She's actually sleeping next to her right now for the night, she will stay with my daughter til shes asleep then come sneak to moms bed and cuddle us! lol Stormy would go to a child faster then an adult. |
1 Attachment(s) Pasquale absolutely LOVES LOVES LOVES kids. He gets so excited when he hears little kids voices. Its so funny how he can differentiate between and adult voice and a kid's voice. He loves to give them kisses! Here's Pasquale with my nephew. Best friends! Attachment 275082 |
Well when my 18 mos old niece comes over my male Teddy jumps all over her and gives her kisses. And she likes him, she tries to hug him. But London will not get too close and Sophie used to bark at her lol |
We have two little girl cousins that come over often to see charlie. they are sort of afraid of him. He gets overly excited when he first see them, wiggly his short tail back and forth..and will want them to pat him. Once he gets over his state of excitment, he doesn't really care if they are around. He doesn't want to play with them. He will sit in his bed and watch them play with his toys. |
Yeah ours are great with kids they will run around with them, the babies that come round poke Ebony in the face and hands go in mouths and alsorts! Ebony gets a im worried about that when she comes across a baby in a bouncer chair but thats only because they are usually tiny babies and we have always made bouncers off limits incase they jumped on baby in excitement so its funny to watch her soldier crawl along the floor on the way past it and give a lick of a foot or hand to say hello. Toddlers and small children are great play things for Ebony coz she can run around and act like a fool without being told to calm down. |
The breeders of our puppy have 5 kids so Kilo (our puppy) was very used to kids when we got him (12 weeks). He treats all the kids with respect except the 7yo (ours are 14, 13, 9 and 7). He still will resource guard his bone from HER but no-one else, so we're working on that with him. Other than that he LOVES kids and will always sit up and wag his tail if he hears kids yelling in the neighborhood and will want to run out (we have no front door and live in the outside) to greet kids if he sees them (but he doesn't). |
