Should I get a crate or bed for new puppy? I wanted to get a really cute bed but people keep telling me about crate training and having a place for the pup to stay when im busy. but im not much of a big fan of crates. |
I dont have Riley yet but I've already gotten him a cage (18x24) and a nice soft bed to put in it so he will be comfy:D. I think crating is good :thumbup:because I won't have to worry about him getting into things or having an accident on the carpet:eek: while i'm asleep or unable to watch him like a hawk. When he gets older and has better bladder control I plan on giving him free reign of the house but the cage will always be his own little private place when he needs it :animal36 |
Layla has both- during the day (now that she is no longer a puppy) she is in one of her MANY beds- but at night she is in her crate where she has been since we first brought her home- she LOVES her crate- when she is ready for bed she climbs right in! I think crate training at night is essential for potty training and for the safety of your puppy. |
We have a baby play pen that we use. We love it, the top is open and the sides are mesh. I felt that a cage was too "cagey"!!!! Ours was only $50.00 at babies-r-us! |
I didnt crate train but I have a small travel crate that has came in handy to have to travel with them. I use it for the cat too when we take her to the vet |
I have a cage for mine and they are 4 years old and 15 months old. (They also have several beds through the house too. They like their comfort. LOL) Mine are great in the house.... but our Yorkies can get into things that can hurt them if they are bored. Since my babies sleep with me and are my constant companions, the only time they are put in there is when I am going to be gone and can't take them with me. I would rather have them safe than have something happen to them. You will decide what is best for you. |
We have a small crate just to have on hand. When we first brought Mia home she was in it. Now she likes to sleep in her carry bag. I leave it in the living room with the side open and when she gets tired she climbs in and goes right to sleep. She gets in it also when she knows we are going in the car.:aimeeyork |

We use both too. Mine have their beds to go to whenever they feel like it. But at night they go into their crate for bedtime. When they get tired at night they will go right into their crates and go to sleep! They both seem to be happy with this setup!:animal-pa |
I have a crate and a bed for Mimi. She sleeps mostly on her bed though since its comfy. She will go in the crate when she does something wrong and I call out her name. She knows even before I call her name she will slowly walk into her crate. lol its too funny |
Tia has both too. Not keen on the idea about caging my baby at first but it has many advantages. 1. keeps them safe out of harms way. 2. excellent for travelling, safety issue again 3.helps them with their toilet control Im sure their are many others, Tia only needs hers at night and for the reasons above ,during the day she has her own cosy bed. |
Hiya, When I 1st got Mika he slept in my bedroom in a little box. As he got older he moved down the stairs into the livingroom and now sleeps in his crate through the night and has his little bed for through the day. When I go out he goes into his crate. He actually loves his crate. :D |
I don't anyone should feel bad about crating, as long as it's not excessive hours of the day. It's their little "den" and their home and they usually grow to like it! |

I have several several beds throughout the house. But I am a firm believer in crate training. Their crates are stocked with cushy beds as well, but I feel it's helped tremendously with potty training. In addition, I don't have to worry about destruction when I am not home. Beyond that dogs have a natural den instinct which a crate fulfills. Tater uses his as a safe haven...running in there if he is anxious or tired. |
