Shopping List So before I bring home my puppy I need to go to Petsmart (even tho I wont get her for 4 more weeks, but I have got to do something productive while I wait lol) and I was trying to think of all the things I need to get.... Here's my list so far, feel free to help me or correct me!Food (same kind as breeder) a blanket for inside her kennel a kennel dinner dishes (portable ones too, since the drive home will be 1.5 hrs?) a collar, harness, and lead assortment of combs (any tips on what kinds?) nail clippys puppy shampoo a toothbrush/ puppy toothpaste? toys treats ( I may get some bully sticks if they're ok for puppies to have. && I heard cheerios are good for training.. are they? What does everyone else use for training) an ID tag |
Pee pads if your going to use them, toothbrush and toothpaste, water and food bowls |
I used cheerios when we got Emmie. Sydney our older yorkie was not to impressed with the cheerios to start with, but now as soon as they use the pad they want the cheerios. |
I don't know if you plan on taking her places with you, but I have a bag for Couver for when we go places, so he can be in there and safe. Also, if you want them to like it, you should probably start putting her in it early. I also agree about the pee pads... It is nice to know that if they cannot hold it any longer while you are gone, they have an alternative. :D |

You might also want to get: A seat belt or car seat for when riding in the car unscented baby wipes Ask the breeder what type of food they are feeding and if they will be sending home some with you, some not all use Eukanuba, or puppy chow not the best food, and you might want to switch foods wich you need to do very very gradually. Also could be using a food not readily available in your area these are things you need to know in advance. |
More than 1 blanket may come in handy. We use tons around here. Children's Benadryl Towels Thermometer would be nice Eye wash (just the sterile water type) may be good to have Ear cleaner (can get from the vet) |
Ok someone help me out my mind is drawing a blank LOL must be age that stuff in the tube so the puppies don't get hypoglycemic |
Maybe a Xpen, because if she is anything like my Baxter was as a baby, he was faster than a speeding bullet, and more powerful than a locomotive. lol. Just to keep her safe, and give you a break from chasing her. |
Sounds like a good list but be sure to add NutriCal. I think different brands have different names but you need it or Karo syrup on hand. When our puppy came home, she didn't eat well for a couple of days due to the transition. Get some kind of doggy bed or sherpa pad for the floor of her kennel, too. Mine has little beds several places and although she sometimes chooses her kennel/crate, she also loves to hap in her little beds. Mine also loves the mini-carrots. I have a health nut, I think. Anyway, I think the coolness helps her gums and she loves the carrots. I got her to eat those before she'd even eat kibble! Plus, I think she knows alot of words but I KNOW she knows the word carrot. I'd get some chicken and brown rice to have on hand, too, in case you have to tempt her to eat for a little while after you get her home. I found those 2 things vital for the first couple of days. Also, since you'll be making a trip to the grocery store, get some plain (unspiced), canned pumpkin to have on hand in case she needs it. I stirred some up in her chicken and rice both when her stomach was upset and when I'd overdone the feeding of cheese. It works like most fiber does for either kind of stomach upset. You might want to get a collar (I got a cat's breakaway) with a bell on it it...at least for first so you can hear where she is. This was important for us since we were not used to having to watch where we stepped. You seem to have a great list of items. I bought so many things we did not need/use while I waited the months before we got Taffy. I think you've got a good grasp of what you need. Can't wait to see your pictures and hear your tales! |

Also you might want to take a wet washcloth or two in case of spit ups AND carry an empty container to get some water that she is used to drinking so that she will have the same water on the way home. |

I second the expen idea! It helps a lot when you aren't home. I got June one and she now considers it her own little space where she can do as she likes. Also, get a cover for the floor underneath the expen - I just bought some vinyl (the plastic tablecloth type) and put the plastic side on the bottom. I know some people think that it is unnecessary, but since we are in the potty training stage where there is no bladder control, I made June some panties. They hate going in them, so she is learning that the only place that she likes to potty is on her pads. I would also recommend washable pee pads - good for the environment and for your budget. (I also made these for very cheap). Definitely chew toys to relieve boredom. And maybe something to keep her warm when you aren't there - Petstages has a nice toy that you just put in the microwave for 30 seconds. Also, get a placemat for the food dishes - the pups can get messy. Congrats on your baby and good luck. Ps. Read everything you can about potty training. You will need it! |
Benadryl? Thanks everyone for your ideas, I am adding them to my list! What is the Benadryl for tho???? |

Hydrogen peroxide is a must for every puppy owner, and learn how much to use and when to use it. You need to do that before the emergency happens. |

Vomiting, and you need to know the exact dosage, for their weight, and also when to give it. The first year they eat everything that lands on the floor, except they can be extremely fussy with their food. You give it for any type of poisoning, from chocolate to sugarless gum, to human medication. You don't induce vomiting if the substance they swallowed burns the esophagus tubes, such as gasoline. You also don't also induce vomiting if they have swallowed a solid object such as a penny, as this can cause choking. We used it on Christmas day, when Joey got a hold of one of those silica packets that come in luggage or purses that absorb moisture. The sooner you can cause them to vomit after they ingest the poisonous substance the better. I also recommend having the phone number of the vet, and the emergency hospital, right by the phone. |
I was just informed about the benadryl today! Our vet gave Max an allergy shot for his sneezing, and said we can supplement with 1/2 cc of childrens benadryl in between vet visits! |
When I brought my puppy home he got sick on the way home and threw up all over me. Just be warned it might happen. I put him in the kennel after that. When we got home he would not eat his kibble and the breeder even sent some home with us. All I could get him to eat was beef baby food. He gobbled that right up, I don't remeber where i heard that tidbit, but I thought if I would feed to my human baby it surely is allright for a puppy. A harness is a better bet than a collar so you don't break their trachea is what I also heard somewhere. Hope this helps. Enjoy your puppy and be prepared for lots of accidents and sleepless nights. |
I would add some that others mentioned already and a few others, I will post the list below. *Nutri-Cal* *Hydrogen peroxide *Finger Toothbrush (for simplicity's sake but you will have to get a regular one later) *Toothpaste *Brush & Comb as some yorkie's Matt easily *A warm little sweater or PJ for cooler days or when you have an AC running, Yorkies tend to get cold easily. *Cozy Bed *Blankies ( 2-4 of them to start ) *A Few Tiny Toys *Puppy Pads *Ear Wash *Shampoo/Conditioner (we use Tigi Pet Head it smells Yummy) *Crate ( we have a soft crate and like that type best ) *A Sherpa for the crate if it doesn't come with one *Harness (No Collar unless it's loosely worn for Idenitification purposes) *Lead *X-pen ( I feel this is a MUST for any Yorkie owner ) That's what I could think of for the moment and definately what I would get if I were brining a new baby home.. Hope that helps! Good luck with your new little one! She will bring so much joy to your home. |

What is a sherpa? :p |
Its a type of wool I believe like the material on the inside of UGG boots |
Just be careful that the beef baby food (or any baby food) doesn't have onions in it! |
Thanks everyone for your help! Buying all the stuff is almost as expensive as buying the dog itself! lol |

I would get ome natures miracle or something like that for those accidents, a flea comb and dont let your pup around other dogs or petsmart until they have had at least several rounds of their shots, you can carry them for safety |
Holle, Even tho the ride home is about an hour and a half I really would not feed your puppy, I would probally call the breeder and ask that she feed her a couple hours before you get there your puppy leaving her home and scared and the motion of the car may make her throw up, Laci threw up all the way home!! It was gross!! |

Oh yes, Nature's Miracle is a great product, and definitely a necessity, if you have carpet. It has an enzyme remover that actually eats the protein in urine stains, and so dogs aren't compelled to return to the spot to go again. I also have a little flea comb for grooming the mustache area. |
